Green interested in re-signing with Celtics

They over pay good players before they have the star core in place.  Once they do that, they no longer have the flexibility to get those stars.



Green is a very good player, but he is not the star the Celtics will need to pair with Rondo.

Yep. Plus, for this year and next year at least, Perk is a starter and Green is a bench player.

I would. Green is very young and has the potential to replace Pierce as the celtics rebuild. Why do you not sign him to such a deal? Who else are we supposed to get? Rondo plus Howard and a bunch of players like Glen Davis and Wafer isn't going to be enough to contend, we need Rondo, Dwight, Green, plus a supporting cast imo.

You get the other star first, then fill in the role players around them. 


At this point, Green is a role player.  His improvement has not been as drastic or as fast as his team has hoped. 


He is a very good player.  He might just be that for the rest of his NBA career.


You don't lock up very good players for large money and long years unless you have the stars in place. 


Very good players do not win in the NBA.  Star players win in the NBA.

Green is an RFA next season (under current CBA rules), and has a great comparable in Marvin Willians:

Both 24 years old, PER around 13, mid-teans in scoring, 5-6 rebounds, decent shooters, good defensive potential...

I can see Green signing a 4 year $27 million contract if a similar CBA is in place next season. That is a little less than Williams got, but Williams was a starter.

No I think his market value is at or probably higher than the extension perk just signed

Interesting then that OKC gave up another starter, and a possible lottery pick to get a guy with less value than Green.

It is team building. The same reason that Lebron and Wade are 2 of the 5 best players in the league but dont guarantee a title is the reason they would move the "more talented" player.

Green is redundant and they would not resign him long term to play out of position and to keep Harden on the bench.

By moving green they increase the value/production of Harden and of Ibaka by moving him to the PF spot and letting him be active and roam on D when paired with a physical C like Perk.

The pieces have to fit or you do not fully capitalize on the teams potential.

EXACTLY. Green was nothing more than a backup SF to OKC. And noone in their right mind is going to offer a backup SF the kind of money Green would demand, especially not with the painfully obvious need they had in a true center.

obviously a discussion best suited for the offseason where we'll know more about how he fits in here and how well he performs in the playoffs with this group

still, it is an ultra-important issue for the future of the team (and some would say for the sake of justifying the Perk trade) so I thought I'd kick it off

on one hand, he's no longer a starter and Pierce is locked up till 2014 - on the other hand, he's a bridge to the future and has the most unrealized upside on the team

so how much is that worth? any benchmarks?

7-8 Mill per is what I would offer.

After he dominates in this years playoffs though his value will most likely rise...

I don't know how keeping Jeff Green justifies Perk's trade.

At the moment I don't know what his value is, and it all depends what your plans are for the future. Are we going to keep extending the window with our big 3? Then sure, you sign him for whatever amount of years (given he doesn't suck here).

If you plan is to make a big splash on FA in the coming years, then some hesitation has to come into place.

But among all that, on the Green vs. Perk debate we now have a restricted free agent. Which means, higher chances for a short term deal, higher chances for a sign and trade, and the cherry on top is the 1st round draft pick.

Wait to see what the new CBA is.  What is a player like Green worth then.

I think seeing him up close and seeing how much he learns from playing with Pierce and KG will determine whether or not Ainge sees him as part of the future with Rondo and gives him a long term deal or not, but either way, the new CBA will determine his value, so it's hard so say right now how much $$ he should get. Ainge is good at locking up young potential stars before they can demand a max deal though, like he did with Rondo.
