We'll see how this pans out, but would be interesting to take a poll... which of these two scenarios gives the Celts the best chance to win it all...

Boston keeps Perk, adds Brewer, keeps Erden/Luke... Murphy in Miami

Boston trades Perk... gets Green, Krstic, Murphy...

I think you'd be very hard pressed to say that the first scenario is where we are better off.

And I think if Perk is here there is a very high chance he ends up in Miami.

This has all worked out REALLY well for Ainge.

Any thoughts?

Murphy wouldn't be able to do anything at all against KG/Perk.

If we had to play against Murphy in the postseason I would be the least scared person in the universe.

Lol Look at Murphy's stats against us last year. He had his games. Perk was letting him shoot too many threes.

I think Ainge is lucky that Murphy decided to play in Boston.

I think it was more than luck one would not make the deal if he didn't have a strong hunch.  Do I think Danny is guilty of tampering?  No.  But I would not make the deal unless I was sure we get another big.

There were probably other options.  Like, for instance:

Keep Perk, trade Erden/Luke for Anthony Parker, add Brewer, add Murphy

I think the key to the Perk trade will be how well Shaq plays down the stretch run and, most importantly, the playoffs.  If he plays at a high level and can perform adequately defensively, then I think this makes the present day implications of the Perk trade more favorable.  (I'm not totally discounting Jermaine but in large part).

Of course, this implies that we actually win the title.  If Shaq plays well and we don't win the title, the naysayers will still point at the Perk trade.

I'm not so sure he wasn't guilty of tampering.  I bet GMs tamper all the time.  He very well may have called up Murphy's agent to feel things out and get some sort of verbal agreement.

And I think the biggest reason to believe that is the Erden/Harangody trade.  While neither were stellar, both had their moments.  For a team that was left with only Big Baby at center after that trade, he had to have been absolutely certain that he was going to do better to pull the trigger.

I think you are leaving out an option:

BOS keeps Perk (and Nate by the way) trades Erden/Luke and signs Brewer (or Thornton) and Murphy...

Rondo
Ray
PP
KG
Perk

Nate
DWest
Brewer
BBD
Shaq

Bradley
Wafer
Murphy
JO

Murphy wouldn't be able to do anything at all against KG/Perk.

We need KG and co. in the paint to help defend Lebron/Wade driving. Add Murphy into the mix and they can't camp out in the paint. And if they try, Murphy will hit wide open 3's at a 35-40% clip.

I really don't think Danny or Doc wanted a repeat of last year's wing situation, where we had two wing choices and neither of them were two-way players. We could go defense-only with Tony Allen or offense-only (and not that much of it) with Michael Finley.  Now Parker is a lot better than Finley was last year, but he does fit into the category of mostly one-way player who doesn't have a tremendous impact on his one-way (that and Brewer isn't as good as TA).

Jeff Green gives them the first two-way wing they've had since Posey.

I think a better counter-scenario would be something like Big Baby and Marquis Daniels to Phoenix for Pietrus.  That way we keep Perk for the stretch run, we use Murphy to fill-in Baby's role and we get our 2-way wing.  Then we pick up Leon Powe as the 3rd string PF.

I would have viewed that as a very solid, almost risk-free move.  Less dependent on JO and Shaq, less chemistry fallout.

Still, I can't fault Ainge for getting a more valuable wing in Green, decent Shaq/JO insurance in Krstic, a Clippers pick as compensation for Perk's inevitable departure, and keeping the lesser but still durable, versatile Big Baby over the one-dimensional, injury-prone Perk.

Potentially even better than 35-40%.  Look at what James Jones, Eddie House and Carlos Arroyo have been shooting in Miami.

Perhaps, but I think other posters have a point when they say Perk likely would have ended up in Miami next year.  Also, I'm skeptical that Troy would have picked the C's if Perkins were still here.

I don't think Perk would have gone to Miami, and even if he had, I don't think that should be a huge consideration for this year's team.

As for Murphy, that could be the case; it's hard to say.
