Because the management of certain franchises is reckless. Bruce Bowen had to play in Belgium for a couple of seasons before becoming a perennial All-NBA Defender.

As the truehoop article states, Brewer will be picked by a well-run franchise.

OMG.  16 pages of posts on Corey freaking Brewer!?!

Have you people looked at this guy's shooting percentages?  They were god-awful as a rookie and haven't improved (AT ALL) since then.  The guy might be able to defend but at BEST if he even signs with the Cs he is the 14th player on the roster.

Brewer = nonfactor

If his defense was so good then why did two teams with worse records than the Celtics give him up over the course of one week for basically nothing?

We don't need his offense. His defense is terrific however, and he'd be a great defensive stopper, like TA but with higher basketball IQ and size

Because Minny is run by Kahn, and the Knicks are coached by D'Antoni. Of course they're not going to keep him.

And as long as Avery Bradley and Chris Johnson are on the roster he is at worst the 13th man.

Minny might be the most directionless club in the league - their fate lies in the hands of a Spanish point guard who doesn't even want to play for them.

As far as NY, I honestly don't why they parted ways with him - could be because defense is an afterthough in D'Antoni's system.

Check out the Knicks board. The fans are livid that they got rid of Brewer and not Mason. lol

It's like D'Antoni actively does not want guys who even TRY on defense on his team.

Reading some T-Wolves blogs from when Brewer was traded, seems to be a player they really like, a guy that was giving 110% every night even in the face of a pretty hopeless cause.  Gotta respect a guy that brings it every night, when the bringin' ain't easy.

Forgot about him.  Why on earth did they keep Mason?  I thought they were going to dump him on Minnesota.

Elite wing defenders that aren't great on offense are generally a luxury that better teams can afford. Bruce Bowen, for example, bounced around a few teams before getting to the Spurs.

lol, I totally forgot Mason is on their roster. I still can't believe they kept Bill Walker over Brewer too.

I thought NY getting Brewer added in the Melo deal was a really smart move. Just goes to show that NY has no interest in playing defense whatsoever, they must think they can just outscore opponents in every game in route to a title. ::)

Why would Roger Mason Jr. accept a negotiated buy out? If he's not willing to accept a buy out, to leave money on the table, why would the Knicks release him? They waived Azubuike instead, a completely useless player (even more useless than Mason).

Brewer requested a buy out because D'Antoni told him he had no plans of using him and NY agreed to save some money and as a favor to Brewer's agent.

Roger Mason makes $1.4M this year, barely above the league minimum, and he's expiring.  New York could have just waived Roger Mason and it hardly would have made a difference.

I don't know how muc $$ Brewer left on the table with his buyout, but he was making ~$3.7M this year, also expiring.  Figuring that Brewer probably didn't walk away from THAT much money (he probably walked away from whatever the pro-rata vet min is for the last 20 or so games, so maybe a couple hundred thousand).  I don't think NY saved a lot of money by buying Brewer out instead.

I don't get D'Antoni.  Just don't get him.  Brewer's a legit rotation player, if you're serious about making a playoff push, why wouldn't you want him around to help defend Pierce/Allen and LeBron/Wade?

Kelenna was making $3.2m this season, Brewer $3.7m, and Mason $1.4m.

Not like Mason would've had to leave millions on the table.

reading that Brewer might go to the Cavs, as they can offer the most money to him. Odd, I would have thought he'd come to the C's to play for a title.

This is the Knicks.  Jimmy Dolan is still calling the shots.  They aren't making these decisions on the basis of a couple hundred thousand here and there - particularly when the team is relevant for the first time in years.

Whichever player got bought out, they Knicks were only going to save a little money versus just straight-up waiving them.  Money had nothing to do with which players were kept.

Not surprising. He's still young (he was on the last year of his rookie deal before being bought out). I guess he's still young enough to want to make the most money possible before the new CBA, and worry about a title later. In comparison, we're used to seeing older players towards the last 3rd of their careers get bought out - guys who have made a nice amount of money and want a ring before it's all said & done.
