Here's every transaction he's made with the Celtics:

http://www.prosportstransactions.com/basketball/Search/SearchResults.php?Player=&Team=Celtics&PlayerMovementChkBx=yes&BeginDate=2003-5-9&submit=Search

He may not have let anyone go who's "excelled," but he's let go of some very good role players that could help this current squad. Dahntay Jones and Ryan Gomes to name two.

He's also drafted and traded for some duds. Again, Marcus Banks and Sebastian Telfair, to name two.

TP. There are few posters on this blog like Roy, Who and yourself (there are a few others as well) who amaze me with their basketball knowledge and the ability to find and post any basketball related info.

You all forget Will Bynum.

That's a good one. But I don't recall Bynum ever playing a game with us? What was the situation there again?

I think he was with us for a camp...a ball-hogging chucker at the time.  I guess he hasn't changed much?

Remember all of those guys...Allan Ray, Erick Strickland, etc.

EDIT:  Training camp, 2005, with Banks, Dickau, D.West, and O.Green.  Bynum was cut.

By this logic he should trade away Rondo and be like "hey. Who have I ever traded away that excelled?"

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Antoine! =)

Funny enough, this actually is the one that came to mind. When we traded an expiring (or close to expiring) Antonie, we got back a cap killing LaFrentz making 13 mill a year for [at least] 5 more years and our first round pick in the deal was freakin' Jiri Welsch. Trading Antoine was his way to come in and make his mark on the team and I thought it was quite arrogant and the wrong move at the time (and still do - Antoine was always a favorite of mine, but it seems to me that there had to be somebody else out there better and with a more reasonable contract than LaFrentz).

Since then, Danny has grown as a GM and where he has traded a player or let a player go, his replacement has been better than he. KG is the obvious one, but others like Powe and Posey, in recent years - while not popular at the time, proved to be the right decision

Tony Allen is having a solid season with Memphis.

Danny offered TA a contract, he chose not to take it.

Tony's agent gave Ainge an ultimatum, Ainge chose not to match. Ainge let him go.

but danny didn't TRADE him away so he doesn't qualify here

Yeah it does...Danny let him walk.

Here comes the effort
Andy Bernard doesnt lose constests. He wins them, or he quits them because they're unfair.

depends on what you consider 'excelled'.

I think Big Al and Gomes have played as well since leaving the C's as they did in Boston.  Delonte has gotten better -- more consistent.

If you're looking for someone that was traded away that developed into a better player than the one we took in, then no one fits that description.  Oh, wait a minute.  Brandon Roy would fit that description.  We gave him away to get Theo and Telfair.

Now that I put more thought into it, I would be very surprised if Semih doesn't turn out to be a better player than whoever that second round pick is used on in the draft.

Chris Andersen was never on the Celtics.

If I'm not mistaken he tried out for the Celtics in training camp or something and got cut (same for Dahntay Jones).

Wasn't the D.Jones pick swapped on draft day for Marcus Banks?
