Boston and Miami are the frontrunners to sign soon to be free agent Troy Murphy, league sources tell SI

Quite surprised to learn that we are interested that much in Murphy... if we sign him it would make other big men expendable to get a wing though.

The thing is, the Cs need big men, not just wings.  That's why Murphy makes sense.
Celtics fan for life.

We do need big men but I think the priority should be to get a wing. We can't predict which big man will be able to play in the playoffs but at least we have some "flexibility" while we basically haven't any wing to backup Paul right now.

With Murphy on the floor (for us) it makes a match up issue for another team because he spreads the floor more than any big we currently have except maybe kg.  Does this mean we can open up lanes for smaller sf ie. wafer or ray?
If we can sign murphy then we should be able to move nate for a 6'7" body, can't we?

^I don't think we can trade Nate until we get another ball handler.  I know Nate has been playing pretty bad, but he's the only decent ball handler besides Rondo.  Delonte is not a good handler of the ball and he's always hurt so I wouldn't count on him at all.

Hopefully, we can snatch up the best free agent available.  I'm hoping that Miami will have to make a trade to get someone decent.

Interesting.  I've got to think that Miami would have the edge, due to more playing time being available and because of Florida's climate / friendly tax status (even if we're only talking about $800k or so, taxes add up).

If we add a wing and a big man, I'm curious to see who the outgoing guys from our roster are.

Same here.  If I had to guess it would be Harangody and Von Wafer or Marquis Daniels depending on his injury. I'm not sure how happy people will be with Murphy once they see him play.  He's a good outside shooter, a solid rebounder, but he's slow, unathletic and not a good defensive player.
do it

This doesn't pass the smell test.  I believe the Heat are at the top of the list, but I don't see the C's up there.

Sniff sniff.  I smell... Murphy.

I'd love to get him.  He'd be a dangerous addition to the Heat.  We don't need the lane opened up any more for Lebron and Wade.

Said this last night. I think Danny is looking hard at this saying, we could trade BBD (Yes i know he is playing well and I would love to keep him too!) BUT he could demand a stupid contract this next off-season and we could get screwed outta a good player. So we trade him and someone else for a backup wing then add Murphy to the bench. Thats a solid solid team. Say we were to get Grant hill or anyone of those wings.

Rondo/West/Nate
Ray/Nate/Wafer
Pierce/Wing traded for
KG/Troy/JO
Perk/Shaq/Semi/JO/Troy

Could see Luke on the way out.

I also wonder if Ainge realizes that there is no viable backup wing right now that will come to the C's via buyout so he'll take the next best thing.

I thik Murphy would help our big man rotation while the O'Neals are hurt. You'd think Miami is a more attractive spot, but Murphy might prefer Boston for some reason.

I think Miami, Orlando, San Antonio, and LA are all more attractive options than Boston, because they all would likely offer bigger roles for the playoffs.

If the money's the same, I don't know why Miami would be that much more attractive than Boston in Murphy's situation.  He's 31 years old this year and spent his career on horrible teams.  At this point, all he could want is to win and to get one last contract for decent money.  He can win with either the Celtics or the Heat, but neither team is really positioned to sign him to a long-term deal for any kind of money.  Boston might have a slight edge there, given that Ainge might see Murphy as insurance in case Big Baby signs with someone else after this season.
