You'd still be giving something up, as you'd have to buy out someone to free a roster space.  They'd either have to cut Luke, cut Wafer, buy out Quis (if they think he's done), or (LONG shot) buy out JO.

Still, rather get Moon for that cost than trade Semih for Anthony Parker.

well my approach would be the following

1.find out whats happening in detriot & the rip situation then go from there

2.buy out daniels & sign moon

3.before that try and trade harngody or wafer for a future pick or just cut ties with 1 of them (so that door becomes open)

I don't like Moon but he would be better than nothing. Hope we can get someone better though.

I mean, he's a body.  Only hitting the longball at a 27% clip this season, and only 32% last year.  40% from the field.  Doesn't seem to rebound a lot.  Not really sure if he's a good defender or not.  I'm sure he'd fit into the rotation, but not really a guy that I'd want to get rid of anybody for.

The only money Rip would leave on the table would be dollars he's almost certain to command on his next contract.  Still doubt that he gets bought out, but you figure that Rip would almost certainly command something close to the full MLE if he was a free agent, so maybe he takes a gamble that he can recoup some monies he leaves in Detroit for a shot at winning.  It would be a gamble on his part, though, moreso with the continued labor uncertainties.

After reading the report I don't get the impression a Rip buyout is "a bit more likely".  Very misleading subject you created.

It just says what we've known all along; Rip needs to give up signficant money to get out of DET.

Lockout or not, I think Rip would have a very good chance of making $12-13 mil over the next two years.  Right now, he's probably thinking about rotting away the last of his basketball prime on the bench of a bad Detroit team, or showing the world what he can do and landing a new contract with a team that wants him.

If you were stuck in a miserable job with a killer paycheck and you had a chance at breaking even by combining a lowball early retirement offer with a less lucrative but more enjoyable new job, wouldn't you do it?

I agree. Maybe it's guided in part by wishful thinking from me but I think Hamilton would have more to gain by losing some money now to get a bigger (long term) paycheck after than getting his due money now and not getting a contract after (or a low one because his value has fallen off).
