Nets are desperately trying to get something for Murphy before they buy him out. They are even more desperately trying to get from under Outlaw's contract. Is it worth it to take on Outlaw's contract for the next four years? http://basketball.realgm.com/tradechecker/saved_trade/5850525

Boston gets: Murphy, Outlaw and a NJ #1 (the price for swallowing Outlaw's contract)

NJ gets: MD, AB, JO, BBD and Nate. Like the Wiz did with Z last year, they wink wink buyout BBD and MD. In a month we get back BBD and maybe later MD, if he ever plays again.

In effect, the Nets get Bradley and Nate for Outlaw. They were gonna lose Murphy anyway.

We get a more than competent 3 in Outlaw and the 5 we need in Murphy and a first round pick for swallowing Outlaw's contract.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the Nets buy out Baby, then no team has his Bird rights.  So my guess is that he wouldn't be overly eager to come back to us, knowing that we'd have forfeited our rights to sign him to an extension next year.

Furthermore, I don't see Baby (or the Nets) giving up the opportunity to work a Bird deal next summer (whether that means Baby stays with the Nets or they S&T him).

A few things:

1.  Outlaw has a horrible contract relative to his production.  I don't think the Celtics would take him on, since they want to rebuild.  Alternately, I don't think the Nets would give up a #1 (at least not their own #1);

2.  New Jersey can't take back so many players; rosters are capped at 15.

3.  There's no way NJ would waive / buyout BBD.  Even if they did, he'd have to pass through waivers, and another team with cap space would pick him up (he's on a very reasonable salary).

Those are the details, but conceptually, I think it's just too much to give up for Murphy, a guy who is going to get bought out.

Tp, Roy. Always value your insight and analysis.

1. I agree that Outlaw's k is onerous. His production in the Swamp is not too good, but he's not exactly thriving under Avery's system there. He's a long athletic wing who can score (esp as a 4th or 5th option)and I believe would thrive in our system. He's only 26, so could be with us for 8 years so could be in our rebuilding plans.

NJ has to fork over a first rounder to make swallowing Outlaw's k palatable to us and gives them much more $$$ flexibility.

2. Nets can dump Drejer, and Uzoh or Ross to make this work roster wise.

3.I agree, giving up Baby would be a steep price to pay for Murphy, and if it came to not being able to get him back, maybe that's a deal-breaker for me. How did the Cav's get Z back last year with no problem after he was bought out?

Even if Murphy gets bought out, there's no guarantee that he comes here. My concern is that Murphy becomes the missing piece in Miami (although they still need a point guard)or in Orlando to replace Gortat or to Dallas to make them even tougher (although Dallas obviously doesn't bother me as much unless they make the finals).

Yeah, there's no way that NJ waives/buys out BBD.  There's also no way we trade for Murphy.  Then we'd have to pay him his current salary.  Better to wait for the buyout, then sign him the vet. min if we're really interested in him.

So we trade our 6th man, then New Jersey buys out the two best players in the deal? Hmm me thinks this trade should never happen.

Why trade for Murphy when we can get him for nothing if he's bought out. And why take Outlaw, who is terribly overpaid and well, terrible. And on top of it NJ gives us a first round pick? Not gonna happen brotha, try again.

I believe that Z was being paid about 8-10M per year.
