I didn't even know that rule existed before yesterday.

I think its a good rule.  Keeps guys from just holding the ball in the post forever.  Its just never actually enforced.

Why do I keep reading that this rule isn't enforced.  It IS enforced and rather consistently.  Maybe because some don't understand it?

The five count doesn't actually start until the guy starts his dribble.  The next time you watch a game (any game) watch the ref at the bottom start his count as soon as the guy in the post start to bounce the ball.  It happens EVERY time.  But since players actually know the rule, they rarely violate it.

The charge call was out of control in the early 2000's. I remember specifically the Celts/Nets series when Jason Kidd and Rodney Rogers were just running to any spot and drawing the charge. Something had to be done. It is not called consistently and that is a huge problem.

The 5 seconds rule is a great rule. It makes for boring basketball when players take 10+ seconds to back their man down. Players really don't do that anymore BECAUSE of this rule. And when they do, I notice that it IS called. It does not limit post up play, it forces you to get better position.

What's the difference between dribbling on the wing forever or the top of they key and dribbling in the post?

The difference is that dribbling at the top and/or holding the ball in the post forever don't offer the offense any advantages.  Why would they do that in the first place?!?  On the other hand, backing your man down for 15 seconds has a clear advantage; maybe too much of an advantage.  And it also makes for boring basketball.

When the NBA is keeping statistics for most charges "drawn", there's a major problem with the lack of interpretation and enforcement of the rule implemented by the NBA last season.  About 80% of the charges being called are grossly bogus.  Makes a complete mockery of the NBA game.

Does the NBA keep stats for most flops?

That's why nobody bothers defending the messiah when he goes to the basket.  Overall, I thought yesterday's game was the best officiated game I've seen this season.  The officiating was pretty even yesterday and the refs let them play..  Pierce even got called for traveling once.

I thought that Rivers should have kept his mouth shut when he protested Bosh making the exact upfake and charge move on Garnett that Pierce makes several times a game and gets away with.  He actually should have been laughing because Pierce gets about as many bogus points on free throws with the upfake and barrel move as Davis gets free posessions for the C's with his flops.

Your second question is the exact point I was trying to make.  I'll reference this and mark times during the next C's game where there are obvious flops called as charges.

If you read the thread its referenced, the rule only applies if you're below the free throw line.

Definitely was, I loved it. When he's playing with that much fire and aggression its a good thing.

I loved it too.  I will give him a pass on crossing the line on that one (he should have known it was going nowhere good), just because he played with such insane intensity all game.  When he plays like that, he really is one of the best players in the league.

Didn't he start above the free throw line?

The one I am recalling started near the baseline a couple of feet inside the 3-point line.  Lebron also held the ball close to the half court line at one point but didn't dribble.  Either way, lebron never backed down rondo for longer than five seconds when below the FT line.

Fanfir makes a good point.....what difference should it make where your dribble....it's your 24 second clock....you should be able to play it anyway you want in my mind.....I enjoy a Gary Payton type player dribbling with his back to the basket, trying to get an angle or wait until his man makes a wrong move....are we all so inpatient now that we can' sit still for 24 seconds ...more like 15-20 seconds once the ball gets in the right spot....

It's all just opinion but I hate that call....I would like to know how many times it's been called since the start of the season...
