Worst Rule in the NBA???

I did not realize until they called this on Rondo that you cannot dribble more than 5 seconds with your back to basket !!!! What??

You only get 24 seconds...you should be able to use them any way you want......

If you have the ability to "post-up" someone sometimes it takes more than 5 seconds to work them into position.....!!! good lord that is a stupid rule...unless I am missing something...

It is 5 seconds of dribbling with your back to the basket while below the foul line extended (within 15 feet of the hoop).

Before you start your dribble, you can take as long as you want. The clock only starts to tick after the first bounce. The clock stops once you pick up your dribble (so you could take another couple of seconds with a head fake and a fallaway J).

This is actually one of my favorite rules that helped change the game for the better. Guys like Barkley and Mark Jackson used to back their guys down for probably 10 secs. Jacksonn would take the jump hook or pass it out. Barkley would wait for the double team or try to point out an illegal defense every time. There were others who did it. It was horrible and it slowed the game down. Great rule.

the NBA game rules are really biased against post play

Then Jackson found a way to exploit this by backing his man down for 4 seconds, then passing back to the passer. He would get it back and back his man down closer to the basket for the jump hook/double team/pass. Horrible.

You must be relatively new to the NBA. The rule is about 10 years old and was instituted becuase players like barkely and mark Jackson would back their man down for like 15 seconds and then shoot a layup. It made for horrible basketball.

So actually, not only is it not the worst rule; it is a GREAT rule.

I have been watching the NBA since 1968......It's your opinion it's a great rule and it's my opinion it's a terrible rule.....I think you should be able to use the 24 seconds how you choose....

and for your information...that is rarely called...I missed it for 10 years...not good on my part....but I don't need your smart mouth....I was merely stating my opinion....

Master Po is right, this is a dumb rule. You should be able to use the 24 seconds as you like, and if refs want to call it then call it consistently, not once every 2-3 years. Also, on that play, House was using both hands on Rondo, which is a foul, which is why Rondo kept dribbling for so long. The correct call was a foul on House, yet the refs pulled out one of the most rarely enforced rules in a key moment of a close game to give the ball to the Heat. Total garbage imo.

I'm not sure about college, but in HS there's a 5 second call for holding the ball and for not making productive dribbles - so in a 30 second shot clock the max a player can really possess is 15 players (hold 5, dribble 5, hold 5) - keeps play going

yea, that's how it looked to me too, but Rondo had a point, he was being fouled.
