Here is an article on it (Sloan allowing Deron Williams to pick which plays to run)

Jazz coach Jerry Sloan makes that point over and over, continuously mentioning -- whenever someone tries linking the two -- that Basketball Hall of Fame-bound Stockton played 19 NBA seasons and apparent superstar-in-the-making Deron Williams is in just his third.

But there's something beyond mere longevity separating the two, and that's this: Williams loves to shout out plays on his own accord, and Sloan readily permits it; Stockton, even late in his career, didn't do that much at all, typically preferring to look back at his coach for the call.

"He's done a good job of running plays, executing for us, getting us into stuff we need to run," Sloan said of Williams, who actually started calling more and more on his own during last season's second half.

Whereas Sloan was calling everything when backup Ronnie Price played in Wednesday's win at Milwaukee, starting point guard Williams called about 10 for every one by Sloan.

That ratio did tighten, though, when the game did the same in Wednesday's second half.

"We were struggling for a little bit out there trying to find the right set," Williams said, "so I looked to him to see what he wanted."

My guess is that this freedom to call plays was more tenious than those articles let on.

Williams may have resented Sloan taking some of that control back. Maybe Sloan has been challenging his leadership and/or effort.

This still feels very strange to me.

Maybe the game tightened up and Sloan felt that he needed to reclaim control and make a play call and Williams ran his own instead.

Sad way for him to go out.  Great coach and hard nosed player.  Maybe the NBA union does need broke.

This is not how a great coach like Sloan was supposed to go...quite sad. I wish he had won the "coach of the year" award atleast once....he certainly deserves it...especially when you notice that someone like Sam Mitchell has been a recipient.

A lot of Jazz fans are pretty mad at Deron already since they believe he'll eventually end up with the Mavs anyway.

Sad ending for one of the classiest coaches in any sport to go. He should have been allowed to leave on his terms and do things his way as long as he was there considering all he has done for that franchise in that tiny, tiny market.

Wonder how Jazz fans are gonna react when Deron Williams still leaves Utah after all this.

If youre gonna cater to a player like this, at least make sure he's locked up long term for christs sake.  You're turning your whole team upside down for a guy that for all you know could just give you the finger and leave town at the end of the year.

It seems like a lot of fans on SLC (the Jazz forum on SBNation) are definitely on Sloan's side so I'd assume that a lot will be bitter/angry towards Deron. I know I'd be.

It's a tough situation though. I feel for the Jazz fans.
