I can't believe people really think he didn't purposely hit the two and leave it at that. He hit one in the first half and saved one for the second. He would've taken 5 in the second half until he hit 1, and then stopped after that (unless we needed a three to tie, then it comes down to him actually getting open).

Ray took 15 2pt shots, his season-high. Charlotte has a nice little defense, but they aren't THAT good.

He wanted to do it at home and it was even publicized. OP you shouldn't have really expected him to do it in Charlotte. Going into the game I figured he was gonna hold back.

It's a pretty monumental record for basketball, considering it isn't often an all-time record is being broken. If he wants to do it at home, that's his prerogative. I certainly won't be mad seeing him do it in front of the home crowd.

(The Charlotte announcers wanted to see it too and were complaining that he wasn't firing three's at will)

It will happen when it happens, and we should all be extremely proud that he's accomplished this milestone as a Celtic ... do we have to analyze it to death and judge the guy's motives, or second-guess his desire to set the record in front of his home crowd? He's always been an unselfish guy of exceptional character ... let's give him the benefit of the doubt, and just enjoy this with him whenever it comes.

Stern loves to have these things televised.   But I don't think Ray is the go for the record type.  He will play his game and let the record come to him.   He knows it will happen given time and his shot.

Can anybody point to a single open three pointer that Ray passed up?

I was watching the defense closely, and Charlotte was jamming both Ray and Pierce on the outside.  Paul got off five attempts, but only hit one.  Ray, rather than force attempts, took what the defense gave him, and scored inside.

I'm sure he prefers to set the record on a big stage, but I don't believe for a minute that he purposefully gave the team less of a chance to succeed by handcuffing himself.

If you review the fourth quarter there's a time he passed up a shot in the back left corner where I thought he was wide open.

If you review the tape just think

Back.... and to the left.
Back.... and to the left.

I watched every second of the game, and I subscribe to the theory that Ray was saving this record for Thursday night against the Lakers.

Me too.  It seems like a pretty big deal to him so it's kind of a no brainer.  Ray gets up a couple 3's in the closing minutes of just about every close game whether he is open or not, but not in that game.  I don't think it's just a cooincidence.

Ray was certainly trying to win the game, but it didn't seem like he wanted to do it from behind the three point line like he does every other night.

I find it hard to believe Ray planned to tie/break the 3pt record on Thursday against the Lakers since way back in 1996.  ;D

It is unreal how Ray knew exactly how many three-point shots he was going to hit this season in order to time it perfectly to break the record during the nationally televised game against the Lakers, which will include Reggie Miller as a broadcaster. Few Celtics fans knew, when the team acquired Ray, how accomplished he was at planning and carrying out great conspiracies.

He's a smart guy, he planned well with the help of his 3 point advisor ;)

These threads are jokes.  This is RAY ALLEN.  One of the classiest guys in the league.  He would never sacrifice a win so he could break a record.  He is one of the good guys of the league.  If it was fixed, dont you think he would have tried to hit one more to tie it there, then break it at home so it would be easier for him?  It isn't guaranteed he hits 2 3 pointers tomorrow night.
do it

Agreed.  If Ray did hold back, I'd be very disappointed, because the Charlotte loss could very well be the difference between home court advantage against Miami in the playoffs, and going on the road.

However, I don't think he did.  Charlotte's outside defense was very good, and inside the perimeter it was weaker, so Ray picked his shots.

I was there in person and I watched him pass up at least 2 to 3 long ranges shots to dribble in about 4 to 5 feet, which he NEVER typically does!!!

Was his mother there??  If not, this was certainly done on purpose.

I am not saying that I don't LOVE Ray, but I am very disappointed for all the C's fans that were there (about 40% of the fans were wearing green, which was cool), especially my 12-year-old son.

More saddened and disappointed.

Also, of course Ray didn't plan this in 1996, but he certainly knew exactly where he was going into this game and who we played next and that it is on national TV.

I am not really out on a limb as far as many are accusing me.

Or, the fallacious interpretation of events when they don't align with preconcieved conclusions.
