As much as I don't like Melo I'm not sure why we aren't trying to get him ourselves.

There simply isn't the need.

Then why do we get all the We need Sheed posts?  Who could help us more?

I'm not talking about need. I'm being greedy.

Why the we need Sheed posts? Your asking the wrong dude. I thought it was made pretty clear that the guy is washed up. I can understand the being Greedy part. I'm sure Danny would go after Melo if he could get him with this teams spare parts.

I don't think the Lakers win the title this year if they ditch Bynumm, not unless they add another quality guy for the front court. They'd lose their advantage over the Mavs/Spurs and that'd shift the balance in those match ups.

Ditto.
The Lakers would get the best player in the deal (Melo) but Bynum's absence would really hurt.  I'd also look forward to the drama of Melo in LA.
Celtics fan for life.

Can't blame them for trying to at least look into the idea of obtaining one of the league's best players.  Carmelo is still young & would be a good piece to help prepare for the future, while having an immediate impact, as Kobe enters the last big hurrah of his career.  They will definitely lose depth in the front court department, but Bynum always has knee issues & misses large amounts of time at some point or another during the year it seems...so it's almost as if his roster spot is null & void at times.  They just need to obviously weigh the pros & cons of making such a move.  Can't wait to see how this all unfolds.

You know...is there any other team with people talking as though they can sign and/or lure any player they want?
You can just call me WaveOcean, or Wave for short. I was not thinking straight when I chose my screenname.

Besides NY and LA? Nope.

That is why the fact that LA is in the mix here is baffling to me. I can see why they are interested, but what possible mix of players can they send to DEN, while at the same time ensuring that they can make it out of the west?

And beat Boston? I can't see it happening here.

Just checked out Carmelo's career stats.  I think he's over-rated as a scorer.  After years of up-tempo, offensive-oriented ball, and with ample support from some excellent PGs (Miller, Billups), his career TS% would rank him 6th among current Laker rotation players, behind Odom, Bynum, Gasol, Bryant and Shannon Brown.  He's not even the main reason for his own team's offensive prowess this year, as Billups and Lawson (one of my absolute favorite players to watch) have generated far more efficient offense for the team.

Considering that the Lakers are currently the number 1 ranked offense in the league (tied with the Nuggets at the moment), and 11th defensively (the worst of any of the contenders), can anyone tell me why they would be better by bringing in an offensive-oriented player who hasn't historically met their existing standards of scoring efficiency, while also removing and reducing the presence of their two most impactful defenders (Artest and Bynum)?
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls
PG: Chauncey Billups
SG: Kobe Bryant
SF: Jimmy Butler
PF: Pau Gasol
C: Yao Ming
Bench: Al Horford, Danny Granger

Our fans talk that way about our team.

Ah, but the difference is that the trade ideas I've heard from you guys sound way more realistic. Your eyes aren't set on big prospects like Durant, Love, Griffin, or Dwight. You also don't talk as though some player will sign with your team in the future just because.

I think this will hurt them defensively and on the boards.  Their size really helps them.  Melo is a mediocre shooter at  43% FG though a nice scorer.  I don't know if Kobe would co-exist with another ball hog.
