Lost in last night's heart-breaking loss to Mavs was the stellar play of Von Wafer. The announcers were going on and on about Semih (who was okay) but he was set up each time by a real nice penetration by VW.  This guy is really starting to get my attention. I could see him giving us good back up minutes at the 2. He continues to play hard D, he can drive very hard and fast to the hoop, and he can hit the 3 (although he still has yet to sharpen his shooting range, but it will come). I would very much like to keep him around in the future. Glad we did not cut him.

He's buying into the defense.  His offensive game has always been there.

I agree to a point; the point being price...if reasonable, yes.  I guess this just proves that certain of us fans (who, me?  :-X) are not alway correct in our assessment of players.)

The only reason I knew anything about Wafer was his run in '08-'09 with the Rockets.

I knew he had bounced around, including Europe, and had fought with one of my favorites...Delonte West.  And that he seemed pretty lackadaisical in preseason.

  • You say when......
Wafer is good and getting better. Playing time is now the issue. He needs more to see what he can do fully, and with the first team. With guys who rotate and pass better, spread the floor so Wafer can do his slashing and hopefully dunking. His shooting is almost there....just a few tweaks and we could have a really strong guy here who can run, shoot, slash, play D and dunk.....so please doc, play this kid more, in prime time.....at least vs the lower half of the league for now....as we know...you never know who you'll have to turn to in THE PLAYOFFS....!

With all the complaints toward DA for the JO signing, can he get some love for his additions (Wafer, Shaq, Delonte, Semih, Luke, Avery) and resignings (Ray, Nate, Quis).

Wafer is turning into a contributor and seems to be finding a defensive game that even he didn't know he had.

Right, Neurotic Guy.  Not many have the track record Danny has.  And the book hasn't been finished on JO yet...let's hope he can help us in our quest for #18...but even if he can't, the acquisitions have been mostly successful, or potentially useful.

as of right now, wafer might be the only wing on this team who consistently wants to penetrate and attack the basket. we def need him, especially when we cant play the transition game.

he could be huge for us in the second unit, but someone would have to get edged out btwn nate, dwst, and quis. i think quis has to stay for his D on 3s, so it would come down to nate or dwest. i cant see doc taking minutes away from either of those two for wafer

Von Wafer has become more and more effective and seems to be doing it within the offense - in other words, being a plus without detracting from the team.

if he continues on this trend, he will provide a very important punch for the offense come playoff time - kinda just what we needed last june in the 4th quarter of game 7, somebody rested to come in and give us a couple of baskets to get us over the hump in a tough game.

who knows down the road ............ Rondo, Von Wafer, West and Bradley form a very strong backcourt for Banner #20.

He's been better than expected but it seems like a bit much to urge Doc to give him crunch time minutes in order for him to be ready for the playoffs. He won't be in the rotation by the time the playoffs roll around barring injury. Do you propose taking him out in crunch time for Pierce, Allen, or Rondo? Any answer to that question besides "none of the above" would be wrong.

It seems your emotions got the better of you before you finished reading the post. The line says, "Play him vs the lower half of the league" As in teams less than %500. He won't be in the rotation unless an injury, well, my sensitive friend, that is exactly why you prepare a second option for the playoffs, if you were a fan last year, you would have seen how we needed help for Perk and Ray, who both were injured by the fakers.  "None of the above"  hahahhahahaha, come on now, take a breath before you post maybe...?

He played great D today, especially against Reddick who seems to have RayRay's number.

Wafer made JJ eat one of his shots and closed him out from 3 land and even inside the arc. When Ray came back in, Reddick  got hot again, midrange and from 3 land. He seems to have tons of confidence against Ray and plays well defensively against him too. Not so much on either end with Wafer.

I agree with the sentiment in the thread title.  Thank goodness, now, huh.  We'll need him to keep getting better now that 'Quis is down, and we'll need him to be able to do it at the small forward position.

I think you may be mistaking emotion for disagreement. I did read that last part, and last time I checked teams don't pull their star players in the final minutes of games just because the team they're playing has a below .500 record. Do you recall that ever happening?

Every win counts the same and we could use home court advantage in the playoffs. The reason why Doc's an NBA coach and you're watching on a couch is that he wouldn't think of blowing a valuable win by benching Ray, Paul, or Rondo in favor our 12 man.
