Interesting to think about what a great fit Billups would be for the Triangle Offense though.  Great spot up shooter (although I feel he hits a lot of his from the top of the key), great defender, and doesn't need the ball in his hands.  Very much a respected leader like Fisher also.

Kobe and Melo would not work together, plus, who then plays Power Forward for the Lakers?

I propose Antoine Walker.

Ok. Im in.

Agreed, no way they trade Gasol. Would be better off trading Kobe for Carmelo, but that will never happen.

I've been thinking about this for a while and I wonder how the Lakers would do without Kobe. Not necessarily add Melo, but some quality pieces. I believe, and the 2010 painfully showed this, that Pau is the anchor of their team. If they could get a faster and more assisting PG (Felton? Westbrook? Curry?) and a more Ubuntu SG (Wilson Chandler playing the 2? Landry Fields? Iguodola?) I really believe they'd be better equipped for a longer period of contention than with Kobe.
Pick 2 Draft:

Salt Laker Flappers

PG: Jameer Nelson/ Mike Bibby/ Pooh Jeter
SG: Jason Richardson/ J.R. Smith
SF: Caron Butler/ J.R. Smith / Matt Barnes PF: Zach Randolph/ Ike Diogu/ Nenad Kristic C: Joakim Noah/ Nenad Kristic/ Tony Battie/ Ike Diogu

TP!  ;D

Then Stern changes the rules and allows the Fakers to play with 3 or 4 basketballs so their starting 5 can shoot 120+ times a game.

About that 2 month period in the middle of the season to tease Laker fans.

your idea would take the Lakers from the favorite to a middle of the pack team.  Kobe is the 1st or 2nd best player in the league, you can't just swap in mid-level starters (even upgrading more then 1 position) and get the team at the same level.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Usually LA trade ideas give me nothing but agita.    But this one actually made me feel good.  Please do it. They lose size and bench strength -- both needed against the Spurs and C's.

I think we're too determined to beat them if we see them in the finals.  If they somehow added Rip and Chauncey without giving up anything then they'd have a shot.

I don't think the Lakers will break up their nucleus. Not when they are the defending Champ.

I do expect them to consider changes in the summer though. If they fail to get to the Finals or fail to put on a strong showing once there (lose in a short series).

Interesting what would you expect them to do?

I think Bynum will be the guy they make available.

I think they'll look to leverage him into a star talent ... probably a perimeter player.

They have been very reluctant to do so to date because they believed his size, interior defense and rebounding was the difference between losing the Finals to the Celtics in 2008 and winning the Championship in 2009 and 2010.

I think that reluctance to deal Bynum will disappear if they fail to win a title + if they continue to look a step below the rest of the elite teams in the NBA (Miami, Boston, perhaps San Antonio).

I think their owner Jerry Buss will make Chris Paul a priority ... look to bring the fast breaking days of Magic Johnson.

Put Andrew Bynum on the table + 2-3 first round picks for Paul. And it might get it done too ... if Paul tries to force his way out again next summer + the trade market lacks options.

A talented seven footer and multiple draft picks will be an attractive package (likely better than any other team will be able to offer that Chris Paul would be willing to re-sign with).
