Jackie MacMullan was just on Comcast sports tonight. She said that she was talking to Perk and he doesn't care if he starts or not. He will still get his career avg in mins (22) . Shaq will get around 20-25 .

Shaq is so much better in the starting lineup than he would be off the bench. He has great chemistry with Rondo and KG, can set great picks and screens for Ray and PP, and can get the opponent in early foul trouble.

It's going to be awesome to see them both against LA on sunday .

is chemistry really better with Shaq opposed to Perk who's played with the starting 5 for years?

Shaq has GREAT chemistry with Rondo and he will be far less effective without Rondo feeding him the ball (how many alleyoops do those guys connect on?)

Meanwhile with all that time Rondo was out - Nate couldn't get him (or anyone) the ball.

With that said, I think Shaq will come off the bench.  Hopefully he will take advantage of second string centers when he plays.

This could also be a Walton-Parish situation too.  Walton came in with the second unit in in the first-second quarter, but Walton FINISHED the game with the starters.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...

I think the real question is, can Shaq be as affective with the bench as he is with the starters? IMO, the answer is no. The easy baskets he gets aren't going to be there and Shaq will tire trying to lead the bench.

Ideally his old teammate will come back soon and solve that.

Is it easier for Rondo to create points by passing to Shaq or to Perkins?  You may argue that that is not because of chemistry but because of Shaq just being more talented on offense, but the effect is the same.

I would rather see Shaq come off the bench and if the shooters are struggling they can throw it in to Shaq for an easy bucket or they can get some easy looks from the double teams on Shaq. We don't need Perk to score with the first string and he can do what he does best play D rebound and set great screens.

We are lucky, this is a great problem to have.

If Jermaine continues to hurt, might we buy him out and have more money to pay Shaq next year? He will need a raise. Or do we just sign him for the mid level exception?

I love Perk, but he probably gets called for more fouls than anyone else in the league while setting picks and screens.

We need Shaq big body and offense against big teams like the Lakers. You will see why on Sunday.

Without Shaq, we are basically going to be shooting jumpers all day vs big teams. Not good.

For Perk, I don't think it matters that much.  However, as others have said about Shaq, I think he'll be more effective starting.  When he's with the starters and can't be doubled, he's unstoppable.

However, I don't see him being effective at his age if he's the focal point of the offense.

Another thought, does Perk really think that way, or has Doc simply told him he's coming off the bench already?

Quite frankly, I don't care.  I want whatever is best for the team.  And if Hondo and McHale can come off the bench, it's not too much to ask Perkins to.  And as I said in another thread, it's not like we're asking him to come off the bench behind Brian Scalabrine; we're asking him to backup arguably a top 10 player of all time.

So both guys have now said they are fine if they come off the bench.

So Doc can do whatever he wants.

So, I would expect Perk back as a starter.

Well duh he's not just gonna be obnoxious and say I'm the starter, nobody's taking my job.

Oh wait...

Interesting.. Im surprised Perk said this because he is pretty sure of being the starter... This is a tough call, I love Perk with the starters because of their five plus years of chemistry. However, Rondo and Shaq play so well together and Rondo certainly has been bringing out the best in him... Tough call, in the end I say Perk will get it. But Doc is the type of coach who will play whoever deserves it more.
