I wonder how much 80's style hand checking would hurt Rondo's game.
You should be wondering how nasty his defense would be.
Rondo isn't all that strong for a PG, his speed and quick hands are what makes his defense.
True but I think he'd be picking a lot more pockets with those quick hands all over his guy.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Talk about a "Dream Team"!! (I'm drooling at the thought). The rotation combinations would be nearly endless, and could be specifically tailored for whoever the opponent was. I wouldn't confine it to only five permanent starters and five bench players, I'd make sure everyone's ego was in check, (well, good luck with Larry, lol, he'd probably have to always start), and then adjust the line-up each night for whoever the opponent match-ups were. Sweet thought ... I'd love to see that team in action!

The real question is, would we beat the 2011 + 1985 Lakers?  Or 2011 + 1996 Bulls?  2011 + 2006 (or 1997) Heat?  2011 + 1995 Magic?

I would take us in any of those matchups.  All of those teams would be fun to watch, though.

Who gets Shaq?
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

Since we're bending time, there's no reason we can't have 3 or 4 versions of Shaq playing against each other.  Guys just can't play on the same team twice (i.e., '11 Kobe and '00 Kobe).

Well if I want to win maybe I go with the 86 team as starters and today's guys backing up.

The guys I'm leaning possibly towards shaking up with is Perk over Chief, and Ray over Ainge.

DJ/Ray/Bird/McHale/Parish
Rondo/Ainge/Pierce/KG/Walton
Sichting/West/Wedman/Davis/Shaq.

DJ and Rondo? DJ was better defender, worst passer but a 80-85% FT guy...in crunch time you dont wanna player who's shooting bellow 50% ala Rondo.
Imagine best starting five in NBA history with Allen over Ainge upgrade...And second team passing ability and shooting (other then Rondo)...and some more shooting in Wedman and muscle in Shaq...

Rondo's D would be good (when the effort is there, like it is now), but DJ was one of the best defensive PG's ever, and surely the best of his era.  DJ over Rondo, hands-down.

Ainge vs. Ray:  Ainge was a scrappy young player, but not really great in 86.  This easily goes to Ray.

Chief vs. Perk:  Each among the best defensive C's in their era, Chief gets the nod due to his far superior offense.

9 Man Rotation:

PF- KG
SF- Bird
C- Parish
PG- Rondo
SG- Pierce

6th Man-McHale
Big- Perk
PG- DJ
Wing- Allen

10, 11, 12th... Walton, Shaq, Daniels

I chose KG to start over McHale because McHale is proven as a 6th man.

I chose Daniels over West, Wedman, & Ainge because of his ability to defend bigger swingmen.

Head Coach: Doc Rivers (is anyone really going KC?)

  • You know my methods, Watson.

I'd go with:

PG: Rondo / DJ / Delonte

I like your complete list.  I would only make ONE change...  I'd take Jerry Sichting over Delonte.

1) durability... Sichting was healthy that season and played a key role as a combo guard off the bench.  He played in all 82 games that season, and Delonte simply cannot be counted on.

2) shooting / floor general...  Sichting shot an amazing 57% from the field (as a guard, mind you) and also a shade over 92% from the FT line.  He averaged 6.5 pts per game to go along with nearly 2.5 assists.

3) toughness...  Probably a toss up between he and Delonte, as I like Delonte's desire to mix it up.  But sichting was no slouch, and he would often get "feisty" and had a way about him in which he could get up in a guy defensively.  Plus, who can forget his fight with Ralph Sampson in game 5 of the series with the Rockets, one which many believe made Sampson fade away in that series, inevitably coming back to Boston for game 6 and getting shelled (and Sampson was invisible).

But again, Sichting would hardly play much with this team, but a guy like him is always needed.
