Why I became embarrassed to be a Celtic fan for 15 seconds.

you can look at it as disrespectful or you can look at it as some people getting fired up for the moment/game/celebration of what is happening.
The MLK remembrance thing would get a lot of fans happy and really appreciating how things have changed in America.
Black guys playing with White guys, black fans and white fans etc that back in MLK's day they only dreamed of.

I think people take things like this way too seriously sometimes.
I mean this could've just been a proud American so pumped at what he's seeing that he shouted out with joy...

   I'm with you Nick. TP. I had heard this happened and was sorely disappointed.  As for a minute being too long......for God's sake, the man gave his life for Civil Rights, you can't give a minute???

     I bought a book today about speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. You wouldn't believe the reactions I got. The nicest were all rolling of the eyes. It's pretty frickin' sad. Most people were neanderthals next to M.L.K. I think many people today still don't like him because he makes them feel stupid.Ofcourse, that was never his intention. What an amazing human being.R.I.P.

I don't think this is anything unique to Celtics fans, unfortunately.  Lots of people don't know how to properly show respect or observe basic social etiquette any more.  That pretty much extends to every aspect of society currently, from the clothes people wear in certain situations to the tone of our political discourse. 

MLK died trying to make the world a better place, a goal he accomplished in large part.  He's one of America's heroes, and I don't think it's too much to ask that people take a minute out of their day to remember his accomplishments.  I'm sure the fan acted out of ignorance (or inebriation) rather than malice, but I do wish people would be be a bit more respectful at times.

while moments of silence should absolutely be respected and MLK was a hero.. a true giant... i really wish that every year on his brithday there would be a moment of silence for Abraham Lincoln.. another hero in civil rights although much much earlier in history .. sorry for the rant

I was there and I just knew that some idiot would shout something eventually. I'm surprised at how long it took for some drunk idiot shout something. I think only about 100 people said something out of an 18,000+ crowd which isn't that bad.

Yeah, of course you should respect whatever amount of time is 'scheduled' for a moment of silence. But, those that think that people are disrespecting MLK because they think a one minute moment of silence at a major sporting event is a little too long are being a little sensitive. Most people truly respect what he meant to the civil rights movement and have learned quite a bit about him throughout school.

Some people are drunk and / or stupid. Let's not get ridiculous here.

Why would this make you embarrassed to be a Celtics fan?  That had nothing to do with the Celtics, just some of the fans.  When you "sign up" to support a team, you are not saying that you will love all the other fans.  I'm sure there are some murderers, rapists, child molesters, etc.. that are Celtics fans.  Doesn't change how much I support the Celtics.

I think it's more likely a guy who wanted attention and got a unique opportunity to have it all be about him.

I'm more surprised about a lot of others joining in.  

On the other hand....there's always premature cheering....50 second mark...eh....45 second mark....a good bit early, especially for moment of silence.

But it's not worth splitting seconds.

It has nothing to do with the Celtics and the mandatory paying of respects at sporting events is annoying. Deep down 99% of people wish they didn't have to do it. You can be a hardcore patriot and respect something while not having to abide by corporate marketing campaigns. It's also disrespectful to force people who are out for a good time to keep their mouths shut because you're at a sporting event. I wouldn't have made a peep either but it'd be out of guilt that I wouldn't, my silence doesn't achieve anything, my thoughts and teachings to my children do.
