they are having a press conference on NBATV saying that they have pulled out of the Melo deal.

Looks like they couldn't get an extension. Melo is NYK bound now

Now Nets fans will just have to hope for a better draft. That would have been a great late Christmas present.

I'm sure this is posturing.  John Henry pulls stuff like this all the time.

When asked if this was his final decision, he responded, "For sure."

"It's my own decision," Prokhorov said. "(The Nuggets) had a very good proposal. They probably did their best to protect their interests."

. . . .

Asked if the deal would remain undone, even if the Nuggets returned with a counter-offer and Anthony said he would sign long-term with the Nuggets, Prokhorov said:

"I was absolutely clear on this matter."

Denver needs to step up. It's been rumored that some teams would be willing to rent Anthony for the rest of the season, extension or no. The Nuggets have to find one of those teams, and start talking.

Otherwise, the Knicks are just going to lowball Denver.

How about Melo to San Antonio for a package of Jefferson, Hill and Splitter or Blair and filler?

Prokhorov came to the US specifically to meet with Melo. What went wrong between then and now? Carmelo pestering must have irritated him to call off the meeting.

Very interesting.  Didn't expect this to happen at all.

Fully expecting 100% for Carmelo to be a Knick next season.

Hey Russian or not we are talking about NJ/NY.
scenario:
NJ :we'll pull out all together and lower his value with mysterious circumstances since he really only wants to go to ny
NY: great that will save us money! here shake my hand
NJ: this envelope feels a little light
NY: first installment, we'll make a killing at the gate!
NJ: than I'll take 20% of gate & food revenues
NY: what about stern payoff? you know he's squeezing all the teams
 ;)

Smart move.  They wouldn't have been a contender with him, considering what they would have had to let go.  Chauncey and Rip have, maybe, a year or two left of top-level play, and that's a maybe at best.

Better to keep Favors, Harris, Lopez, and all 5 picks.

Yep.  Based upon the return most teams get for superstars, Denver was making out okay.  They got greedy, always asking for a little bit more.   I saw on RealGM yesterday that the "agreed upon" deal still had moving pieces because Denver wanted to negotiate further.

Denver should have just made the deal (conditionally, if NJ wanted), and put Carmelo on the clock on whether he'd agree to an extension.
