Denver dun gone and messed this one up

Yep.  Based upon the return most teams get for superstars, Denver was making out okay.  They got greedy, always asking for a little bit more.   I saw on RealGM yesterday that the "agreed upon" deal still had moving pieces because Denver wanted to negotiate further.

Denver should have just made the deal (conditionally, if NJ wanted), and put Carmelo on the clock on whether he'd agree to an extension.
I don't know, NJ supposedly was fine with the deal and just wanted to meet with Melo. He's the one who chilled that one.

I think Melo finally said, "I'm not signing the extension". At that point NJ will not make the deal.

Yeah, NJ was okay with the deal, but if Denver wasn't, it couldn't go through.  As I understand it, Carmelo couldn't legally talk with NJ until the league had been given the trade papers, and had granted NJ a "window".

I was thinking about this today, and kinda asked it in the BDL chat:

If you're a competitor - say Dallas - would you think to roll the dice and slightly overpay on a rental, and then hope Melo starts to think about the $ signs after the trading deadline?

I think you're right.  Melo could be hardballed, since NOT signing an extension would likely mean a hefty pay cut in the next CBA...millions...gone.  Would Melo cut off his own wanker?

Not sure what Denver will do now. I, as well as Bill Simmons, think that the Clippers have the best package in Kaman, Aminu and a 1st.

Whatever the Knicks will offer will be much better of an offer than that.

And I think it's worth it to give something up to have him this season (instead of waiting).  They're showing to have a team over there, and Melo would pretty much push them over the top to contender-level.  They could use some size, but no denying the talent.

The big asset LA can offer is Minnesota's #1 next year.  That's a pretty big chip, arguably better than anything the Knicks have.

Arguably.  I think Gordon would have to go to Denver, now granted they wouldn't unload him for a rental, but that would be a nice package.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation -
Deep Bench -

I'd take Curry, Gallo, Chandler/Fields over that Clippers pick

I don't totally blame Denver for playing hardball.  I'm not so sure that Melo doesn't totally back off trade demands and sign an extension this season.

Does he really want to risk losing a ton of money if the new CBA dramatically cuts player salary?

I dont understand how anyone can blame Denver, or didnt see that Melo was never going to the Nets. It doesnt matter how much the Nets were going to give the Nuggets or how many players the Nuggets asked for, Melo never wanted to play for the Nets, and he still doesnt, and he never will. Melo holds his own future, he's not going to accept a trade and sign an extension to a team he doesnt want to go to.

Spike Lee knows what is going down. Melo to NYC - one way or the other. He is to smart to say it can see the little smirk.
