I Want To Trade BBD :(

Pretty much every bench player we have should be available in trade, period.  That's one thing.  Looking to dump a player is another.

I'm not ready to dump BBD and Nate, but I sure as heck am ready to trade them...

There aren't a lot of secrets when it comes to evaluating the ability of players that have been around for a few years and been playing as much as BBD and Nate have the last few years.

I don't think any GM will think either Shrek, Donkey, or even both will be the answer for them unless they're looking for bench players.  And there is only so much a team will give up for bench players.

Together, Shrek and Donkey earn $7 million (and four?) dollars this year, with BBD expiring and Nate having one more [lockout?] year.  That's Nocioni/Posey money.  Would that return represent something like "fair value"?  For bench players?  Probably.

We can only expect to get bench players in return...

I can only conclude that there is some kind of bias against BBD, really not sure why that is.  The guy was playing at most, out of his mind, and at least very good, before KG went down.

Let's get one thing straight:  We're all Celtics fans here and want the team to succeed.  Therefore, it doesn't make sense that there would be a 'bias' against Davis.  What has typically been in question though is how valuable/productive Davis actually is.  That's where the various angles come in.

As much as I don't like watching Davis play, and rarely have, I route for him to succeed and don't think it'd be wise to trade him unless we got another PF back in return.  Right now Davis is a starter, and its clear that he's not good enough to be.  But he does have a role on the bench.

There's only 2 scenarios where I see trading Davis makes sense:

1)  If we got a pretty decent PF in return
2)  If Davis goes back to the bench and continues to play the way he has the past 4 games or so.

Fills need for decent quality depth, saves $$ this year, gets pick.

Why for Boston:

Diaw is perfect for Doc's offense, Henderson is developing into a good player that might take off playing with Rondo, and Najera is a decent non-rotation guy, some level of toughness...but really is the price for taking Diaw and Henderson...

Since it's all about this year and our team has shown that it's a top tier team if healthy, I'd have to be completely convinced that any trade would result in us being immediately better.  Orlando was convinced that their team could not compete with the top teams in the league and had to take a risk.  We do not need to take a risk.   Baby for Tayshon Prince, Carl Landry or David Lee (elite defender at the 3 or fierce rebounder with inside skills) -- OK -- but for anything less than a sure thing -- no.   And I don't think Baby gets you any of those players.

Even if the Celtics want to trade him, now is not the time.


1) Injuries have put him in the starting lineup.  Trade him, and who starts?


2)  He is slumping.  That means his trade value takes a hit while this is going on.

That's not even close to Posey/Nocioni money. Both of those players signed long term MLE size deals.

$4 million was pretty much the going rate for backup PGs this year. (Ridnour/Nate/Telfair/Blake/etc) Same thing with BBD $3 million is pretty cheap for a backup PF/C.

Now that doesn't mean they'll fetch anything other than backup level talent, but neither one is the sort of contract that teams dread to take on on. (like Posey/Nocioni)

Ouch.  So much for disagreeing agreeably...

In any case, here's the thinking...

The pick is compensation for getting Gerald Henderson, who is starting to develop quite nicely.

JO has another year, and is showing himself to be 1) unreliable/unavailable at all, 2) only availble for backup minutes when he is, in fact, a go, and 3) not much offensive game left.  So he doesn't have much value, and with another year at $6 million, he has little value on the court and probably a negative value in trade.

The key is the value of Diaw.

Trading Baby because of 4 bad games would be a terrible move. Hes a bench player, a good bench player, hes playing horrible right now but that will change. Hes trying to fill in for KG but he has 10% of the talent of KG.

Here's my conditions on trading baby:

1. Has to bring back a backup PF that can play in playoff rotation against C's likely tough opponents, e.g. Heat, Lakers, and Spurs. (I'd maybe add ATL, but not worried about backup PF against ORL or NYK due to their different use of personnel.) KG cannot play PF for 48 minutes in the playoffs, and I do not trust any of the wings or centers on the roster to play PF -> I want to see C's win this year.

2. Cannot tie up long term money, unless its in a player that can be a starter on a championship squad with Rondo. (Since that's unlikely, let's just say no deals worth > 5 million in season 3.) -> I want to see C's reload in 2012 and they need to keep the FA pathway open if possible.

3. Can be talent neutral or even a small disadvantage to Celts, but should improve the overall roster. In this case a trade of JO / BBD / Nate would be OK - if it brought back a guy that be a third string  C/PF on a reliable basis AND a combo forward who could backup KG or Pierce. But bringing back a PG unlikely to play much behind Rondo and redundant with West wouldn't make sense.
