Quote
The New Jersey Nets' latest attempt to acquire Denver's Carmelo Anthony involves the Detroit Pistons.

Sources with knowledge of the talks confirmed the Nets and Nuggets have discussed a three-way trade proposal that would land Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups and Pistons guard Rip Hamilton alongside Anthony in New Jersey.

But a source close to the situation subsequently told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard that the three-way deal in its proposed form -- which would require the Pistons to take Nets center Johan Petro and surrender a first-round pick in addition to absorbing the expiring contract of Troy Murphy to the Pistons -- is not amenable to Detroit.

Wow if the Nets ever figure out a way to get Billups and Hamilton along with Melo and not give up Lopez , that would be an amazing job.

If I was the knicks I would try to get in on a similar deal . Give up Felton, Galinari, Chandler and Randolph, 1st rd picks and salary filler for Hamilton , Billups and Melo.

(1) D.Harris + Q.Ross for Rip Hamilton

(2) T.Murphy + Favors + Vujacic + Humphries + 3-4 first round picks for Melo + Billups

That is my best guess at what New Jersey would be offering up if that report is correct.

Or maybe flip D.Harris and T.Murphy around and give the Pistons one of those first round picks. Likely still need to give up 3 picks to Denver in that scenario though.

New Jersey Nets

PG - Billups, Farmar and Uzoh
SG - Rip, Morrow
SF - T.Outlaw, S.Graham
PF - Melo, D.James
C  - B.Lopez, J.Petro

That would leave the Nets playing a lot of small ball. No out and out power forwards on their roster.

Brook Lopez is having an awful season on the backboards and has never been a strong rebounder. Neither Billups or Rip, or their backups, are strong rebounding guards. Carmelo Anthony is the only above average rebounder at his position (SF) and he is below average for a PF. The Nets would be hugely vulnerable on the backboards.

They should be very talented offensively though, a top ten side. Possibly a top five side.

And defensively they should be respectable, likely middle of the pack.

In the short term, they look quite similar to Knicks.

----------------------------------------------

Firmer foundation to build around in the immediate sense ... but given the ages of Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton, how much of a window does that group truly have? They can flesh out the rest of their roster well enough to put a contender on the floor before those guys finish up?

Doubtful.

It's a lot of salary for New Jersey to take on. They'd have to send someone else out along with Favors, Harris, Murphy, and Petro.

Travis Outlaw's salary slots nicely into the necessary amount required.

Here's a trade that works in the checker. Picks would also need to be moved to even things out. Detroit might need one, to take on Petro's deal.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2asbo8c

To Detroit: Petro, Murphy, pick
To Denver: Harris, Favors, Outlaw, picks
To Jersey: Hamilton, Billups, Anthony

Jersey lineup, post-trade:

PG - Billups, Farmar
SG - Rip, Morrow, Vujacic
SF - Melo, Graham
PF - Humphries, James
C  - B.Lopez

Better balance in the starting five, but thin at the 3-4-5. Sasha's expiring contract could be dealt for help there.

I wonder though if Travis Outlaw's contract is not looked at as maybe the worst, or one of the worst signings of the off season.

It's right up there. Al Harrington? Brendan Haywood?

Haywood was a bad one. At least Harrington produces.

Most ironic part about this trade rumor..

Is that lineup could have happened 7 years ago had Detroit picked Melo instead of Darko

Imagine a lineup of Billups,Rip,Melo,Sheed and BigBen
Bench of Prince, Lindsey Hunter, etc

Sick unit but even a Nets lineup of Billups,RIP,Melo, filler and Lopez. They could destroy Miami, and a real opponent to Boston.

I thought Billups was looking pretty old during the USA stuff I watched last summer. I don''t think he's that great any more.

If they wait until Feb 15, 2011 when they can trade Vujacic, this trade works

Detroit gets - Murphy, D. Jones
Denver gets - Vujacic, Favors, Humprhies, Harris, Petro, 2/3 picks
NJ gets - Melo, Hamilton, Billups, Harrington

It would give NJ a bit more quality size by adding Harrington to the mix.

Villanueva could be added to the mix instead of Harrington by sending some smaller NJ contracts to Detroit like Graham and Ross.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

In Detroit, perhaps. Kuester has really no idea what he's doing with that roster. Too many guards to give minutes to, and no one can establish a rhythm there.

In that revamped Jersey offense, I bet he'd be a lock for 15-20 points a night.

From what I read, Detroit would do Hamilton for Murphy straight up.  Hamilton just doesn't really have much value at this point.  I don't see NJ giving up a major asset to give him.

What? That team couldn't "destroy" Miami. That team would be on-par with the Knicks. Rip/Billups are on the downsides of their careers. They'd have a poor bench, etc.
