Baby has been great this year, overall.  Over the past few games, though, he's been struggling.  He's playing poor defense, and has turned into a black hole on offense.  Even yesterday, after Doc berated him about his missed three pointer, there he was on the last possession of the game, behind the three point line, calling for the ball.

Poor performance on the court happens to everyone, but I worry that BBD carries this stuff with him.  Case in point:

Quote
On too many possessions to count, both offensively and defensively, Davis seemed to be trying too hard to make too big an impact.

And by doing so, he achieved just the opposite.

No play better exemplified the kind of night Davis was having than the 3-pointer he took with about a minute to play and the Celtics down by 3.

Rivers gave him a disapproving look following the miss, and it's fair to say Rivers probably echoed some of those sentiments in the locker room afterward.

Upset, Davis startled the few on hand when he slammed a door closed prior to storming out of the Celtics locker room before the media were allowed inside.

In his post-game press conference, Rivers was asked about players stepping into their roles and not trying to do too much.

"Who are you talking about?" said Rivers, who knew exactly who the question was about. "I'm just curious. Can you give me a name?"

When reminded about the player who took the ill-advised 3-pointer in the fourth quarter (Davis),  Rivers responded, "that's a very good observation. I'm going to let you just say that. I mean, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that."

Link

It may be a minor thing, but "storming" out of the locker room when the coach is assessing the game seems like a pretty immature and selfish thing to do.  In the past, it's those bouts of immaturity that have bothered me the most about Baby, and I hate to see them start to pop up this season, when he's otherwise made a lot of progress.

Yeah, he's always been a sulky type. He gets too high with highs and way too low with the lows. You can see it with how he teared up after KG yelled at him or just the other day with Shaq. I don't think he's the type of player that handles criticism well.

That article by Sherrod Blakely nailed it. Baby is at his best coming of the bench as the team's 6th man. The problem is Baby seems to think that he is better than that. And the fact that he is entering a FA year seems to make him wanna "do more" in order to get a starting gig either here or elsewhere. Didn't he hold back signing with the C's a few years back, hoping to get a better role and contract via free agency? Baby probably thinks that he is a starter in this league and wants to prove it now that KG is out. But as Blakely said, by trying to do too much, Baby ended up hurting his team.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
lol you have to give him more credit than this.
Do you remember when garnett went out on the backtoback title run?
who stepped up and filled his shoes?

the fact is that davis is EASILY a starter on many other NBA playoff teams.
Compare his minutes and productivity to someone like david west.
Imagine if he played starter minutes?
We are lucky to have this beast on the celtics. Give him some time to relax into his new role and be thankful that we've got him and the heat or lakers don't have him come playoff time.
The is a nightmare match up now that he's got the sweet jumpshot.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

This is probably true, if only because there are some really bad playoff teams (i.e., 12-18 Milwaukee).  Of the teams over .500, though, I'm not sure he could start.

6. Knicks -- Gallinari > BBD
5. Atlanta -- Josh Smith > BBD
4. Orlando -- Bass = BBD
3. Chicago -- Boozer > BBD
2. Miami -- Bosh > BBD
1. Celtics -- KG >> BBD ;)

8. Blazers -- Aldridge > BBD
7. Hornets -- West > BBD
6. Nuggets -- Harrington = BBD
5. Utah -- Millsap > BBD
4. OKC -- Green > BBD
3. Lakers - Gasol > BBD
2. Dallas - Dirk > BBD
1. Spurs - Blair = BBD

I think the guys in the same range as BBD are Bass, Harrington, and Blair.  Looking at those guys -- Link -- they're all pretty close.  Blair is by far the best rebounder, and BBD ranks the worst.  Bass and Harrington are the best scorers, with Blair worst.

So, in terms of playoff teams that are over .500, I'm not sure that BBD could "easily" start for any of them, but there's a chance he'd start in Orlando and Denver, I think.  (I think San Antonio likes Blair's rebounding.  I could see Orlando sticking with Bass, too, since he's been the more productive player.)

Regarding BBD vs. David West, West kills him in terms of points per minute, assists per minute, and eFG%.  West has a slight lead in rebound rate, too:  Link.

Of course, under normal circumstances, we don't need BBD to play as a starter.  As a backup power forward, he's excellent, so long as he plays within himself.  His consistency has made major strides this season.

This is true.  But remember that we did NOT make it to the Championship series that year.  And also remember that the probability of Davis helping take another team to the finals is small.   He must learn to play team ball not just off the bench, but also as a starter.  Davis is not the player to win all by himself...few are...

I don't know if I'd put Gallinari ahead of Davis. It really depends on your system. If you're a halfcourt/defensive minded team then it's Davis. If you're a uptempo team then it's Gallinari.

It's true we didn't get the title the year that Baby had to start in so many games since KG was out, but you have to remember that, at that time, Baby was only a rookie or 1st year player. So, actually, he played rather well considering this fact. To play as starter in the finals as a first year player on a team like the Celtics and do pretty well is saying a lot.
I still have confidence in BBD. This has been his best season and a small slump in his play does not disturb me.

I'd rank Blair above Baby.  They are roughly equivalent as offensive players, IMHO.  He doesn't have the J, but has a sweet little runner that Baby doesn't have. Defensively, Baby has the slight edge, but Blair's rebounding is so much better.

I am still hoping for Davis for Sixth Man of the Year, although he has to keep coming off the bench.  I don't think anyone should give up on him.  I just think he has his strengths and weaknesses and playing him in crunch time yesterday was playing into his weakness.  He was not having a good game, he was getting down on himself and short with others.  Read Sherrod Blakley's column for a run down.  Sorry, I can't give you a link...but I think it was on CSNNE.

Baby has been terrible for the past few games and the Hornets one was clearly his worst. Maybe being the starter got in his head but I thought he was more mature than that.

Baby did his best Zach Randolph impression yesterday.  It was atrocious.
