I expected more out of him filling in for KG.  I understand having a bad game, but Baby's had a bad 5 games and he still refused to move the ball.  The other 4 starters + MD all shot better than 50% in the game, yet Baby took the most shots.

Baby simply needs to play smarter ball.  He shouldn't be taking 3 pointers with the game on the line.  He shouldn't be taking contested jump shots with 23 seconds on the shot clock.  He needs to play as a part of our unit and he simply wasn't today.  Doc made a mistake putting him back in him when it was Harangody that sparked an 18-0 run (also notice Harangody had the same number of boards while playing 1/3 the minutes).
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

  • You say when......
I agree.  I see bbd's mind getting the better of him. Maybe a youthful desire to be the hero...thing..... His shot was goin very well, at 10-12 feet. I had a feeling he was going to start the 3....and to hear at the end of today, after he tried one 3...someone said as Ray got the ball from pp fumbling, bbd was doing the scal...waiting in the corner calling for the ball, for a 3.

What he should have done, is see the floor, do his job, pick for our #1 shooter, ray, after setting that pick on rays guy, roll to the hoop for the rebound, there was 10 seconds when ray got the ball. But, instead, bbd stood flat footed, another common thing with him lately. He has shown he can get offensive rebounds, but he has to want them more..!

At his height, he can get them, with that body, and more desire. That IS the job we really need from him. Of course, this is why  Leon Powe eventually took his minutes and position, doc likes bbd, but couldn't deny Leon getting it done. THAT is what we need from bbd. There has been games where he did some of that....But the 3 is a lot easier, as is the outside shot.

baby took one bad shot today.  it was really bad, but it was one.  the guy has been enormous for us this year, he is the 6th man of the year to this point.

harangody is a rookie, he's a defensive liability, no reason whatsoever for him to get mins at bbd's expense.  not saying he shouldn't get more mins, but not at bbd's expense.

His defense bothered me much more than his offense.  He seemed to miss rotations, and generally play lazy defense, all game long.

However, his offense was poor even beyond the three pointer.  BBD seemed to only look for his own shot, ignoring everyone else on offense.  He was the ultimate ball-stopper, and that often resulted in him taking bad shots.  Basically, he presses too much trying to be the hero.  It's a major disappointment.

Yeah Roy i've noticed that the last few games. During the orlando game he kept trying to force iso plays for himself or kick it out to nate, the result being an utter failure. Beyond Pierce or KG I always hold my breath when someone tries to make an iso play for themself since they usually fail. The reason why everything looked great for a while was because of the ball movement. Ball movement has basically grinded to a halt now and we're relying on iso plays. We won't win alot of games that way...

Junkyard is right though in that he's been great this year, but the iso stuff has only been going on the last few games and i'm sure that'll disappear as we get guys back. Doc doesn't have many tools to use right now. The only thing i'm worried about is losing HC to the Lakers or the heat. If I hear HCA doesn't matter against the lakers anymore i'll rip my hair out.
True Celtic = Leon Powe

Bring back the show!!!!

If I had a dime for every three-pointer like this that Pierce took in his career...

If I had a dime for every three-pointer like this that Pierce took in his career...

Two things:

1) At worst, Pierce has a 1/3 chance of making the three pointers he takes.  That's not the case with BBD; and

2) For much of his Celtics career, he was forced to take less than ideal shots, because there was little talent around him capable of winning games.  That's again not the case with BBD.

Doc was extremely upset with BBD's decision making.  There's no real need to defend him; he just needs to learn from it, and move on.  His head was totally out of the game today (yesterday).

Yes, the 3 was horrible, but I agree with Roy H that his defense and I'll add his rebounding too are troubling more than just that.

For whatever reason, he didn't have it in a lot of ways today.  How does a guy his size seem to hit the offensive boards that much better than the defensive boards?  It's effort in my opinion along with priority.  Guys like Harangody and Daniels secured defensive rebounds 10x better than BBD today simply out of fundamentals and effort.  That is more troubling than an ill-timed 3 pt attempt by a non 3 pt shooter IMO.

My biggest problem with Baby is that he has always played the role of being a major ball stopper. Once the ball comes to him, no ones else is getting it, and not only is it incredible annoying its a terrible flaw to have... ANd the threeeee...

Doc reaction was priceless... "Baby, A three?....A three??"

I love baby on the celtics, i really do.  but I feel sorry for the bad team that might over pay for him and let him play starting PF.

I see BBD turning into a trainwreck when/if he leaves this team.  Does anyone else think this type of play from him has to do with this being a FA year for him

He had a really bad game tonight, and his head was in the wrong place, but we all have days like that, and it doesn't change his position on my list at all. I really like Glen, and he has been giving us great production this year, as well as leading the NBA in taking charges ... he's allowed a couple of bad games each year, just like everyone else on this team is.

I think Baby can be a starter in this league, but just not a top level guy. If Haslem or Bass can be starters, I don't see any reason why he can't. That said, Baby was probably giving some true insight this off-season when he said he didn't know what his role was. The truth is he really doesn't. Offensively speaking, he needs to be an energy type play that gets his points by hitting the open medium range shot and using his girth, and good hands, to finish around basketball off of passes and offensive rebounds. The problem is that he's become an isolation type player. It seems that the majority of the time he's looking the go one on one vs his defender, regardless if there is mismatch or not. If there is a switch and he has a size advantage, then I'm all for it. However, time and again, including against West yesterday, you see him isolating guys that he has no real advantage over. He's still very young. In fact, he turned 25 today. Hopefully, he figures it all out.

Every player has a few bad games throughout the season.I keep in mind that BBD is a role player regardless of others feeling he is a starter-type in the NBA.Even though he could be a starter on some teams i have never felt the Celtics would win a championship with him being their starting pf.It is what it is and he is going to screw up every once in awhile.GO Celtics!

Glen will bounce back. I have not lost faith in him. He has been big in way too many games over the years for me to give up on him.

He will redeem himself in TOR tomorrow.

Good post.  Love Baby, in spite of his horrible game yesterday. His head just wasn't in the right place.  He'll be better next game.
