  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Frankly the first Pirates movie was a tour d'Force for Depp because not only was it a remarkably realized character but it was refreshing to see one of the great character actors (in my mind the greatest) of this generation give a performance of that magnitude without having to find a character who plumbs the depths of human depravity to deliver. It was the acting equivalent of Jordan shrugging his shoulders.

Two followups:

1) Did Bill Simmons charge you royalties for that statement, or did you escape the trap because it wasn't a footnote?

2) You're 100% right. Johnny Depp based a lead character that was a pirate in a movie based off of an amusement park ride on Keith Richards, and it was beautiful.

But I've fallen asleep in 2 consecutive sequels, and I'm not reading great things about Depp's excitement about the next 2.

1)To paraphrase Denzel: Bill Simmons ai't got spit ( he really does spit there) on me.

2) Depp is freaking awesome

3) I really hope Ian McShane as Blackbeard makes it awesome and makes up for the fact that the man who used to Run Disney's film department is gone, which is what set Depp off.

When Bill Simmons goes Full On Oprah mode and is just a personality instead of a sports guy, and starts listing his favorite film performances...I firmly believe he will quote what you said above.

Or maybe..you...ARE Bill Simmons?

Or maybe I want you to think I'm Bill Simmons... Nope, can't think of a reason I'd want that.

haha..well done sir. But like Mulder before me I shall not be thrown off the path so easily. (pushes up imaginary nerd glasses on his nose)

I'd like to add Bill Simmons also to my list. But Book of Basketball Bill Simmons. Not writing about actual events a day after Bill Simmons.

Game Journal Bill Simmons I also love.

Johnny Depp

Two questions:

1) Is your love for Johnny Depp tainted or encouraged by the fact that probably his most memorable role (though flawlessly executed) is the product of a Disney World ride, and has gone for 4 increasingly bad sequels?

2) Is anyone else's favorite Johnny Depp role Mort Rainey in secret window, even though he was the 2nd best performance in the movie? (after John Tuturro)

Addendum: Actually, easily my favorite Depp role was Rauol Duke. But I loved secret window.

EDIT: Props though for listing Nathan Fillion, even though we both know you really love Captain Malcolm Reynolds.

I'd like to add Joss Wheadon to my list, but if I did, I feel like somewhere google would book me a flight to comicon and make my girlfriend breakup with me.

I don't know if most memorable is exactly the same thing as most visual and marketed.  Edward Scissorhands was awesome.
Edward Scissorhands is one of my all-time favorites. I was also a jump street fan back in the days, so I could get behind Depp.

I am also a Joss Wheadon fan.

But my real list:

Jon Stewart. Others have explained fine.

V.S. Ramachandran. Love his lectures and his books. The brain is bizarre and we are much different than we think we are. All it takes is some severed connections to turn our world upside down and to deeply challenge our sense of self -- and to make it into one of his books.

Thom Yorke. He is clearly a jerk and seems to know it. But he is a brilliant musician who is serious about his art.

David Gergen. My favorite news network commentator. Doesn't pander to any ideology, probably because he is an academic and has worked in presidencies on both sides. Focuses on possible implications and potential strategies instead of focusing on how he can make someone into a hero or a villain.

The main character from Breaking Bad. I have only watched season one so far (Netflix), but what's not to love.

Richard Dawkins. His popular science books are incredibly well written and insightful. I was also impressed with his earnestness in person. Though I have disagreements with some of his generalized statements about religion (no need to lump all the religious in with those who undermine science) his prose is beautiful and inspiring.

I loved Depp in the first Pirates. He carried the movie. But the character has been bled dry to the point that only the franchise lover crowd can endure.

His character was great when it was fresh. My favorite Sparrow scene is one of the first when he walks off his sinking ship onto the dock. Brilliant.

Gotta agree with this. The little picture below my name of Delonte I've had and kept on here since he was originally on the team.

I've had a man-crush on Pierce for like the last 8 years. KG was instantaneous from the first game against the Wiz to start the 2007 season. Ray Allen followed very soon thereafter.

I am beginning to have a full-out man-crush on Shaq too.

Mariano Rivera (GOAT), Dan Haren (most underrated pitcher the last 4-5 seasons), and now apparently Blake Griffin.

Leonardo DiCaprio is the actor I most have a man-crush on. His movies are getting better and better, and dude obviously has unparalleled swag (maybe Timberlake and Jeter are close though).

No musicians or politicians.

Also IP, I'll admit it too, I like Ron Artest.  I used to love Ron Artest but it is physically impossible to love a Laker and not be a complete loser/moron.  So I've been forced to downgrade him from love to like in my heart.
