Living in NC, I don't get many chances to see the Celtics live. But I got tix to the Bobcats game for Christmas, so I took my wife, daughter and son (celebrating his 2nd birthday) to check out the squad. My son and I both wore #5 Celtics jerseys, and my daughter and wife both wore #21 Timberwolves jerseys. The game was a good time, as always, but usually when I watch a game live I can get some good game insights and have some good basketball "intangibles" to discuss. But this time? My only insight was that the Bobcats are awful. Almost shockingly so. This was the way I described the game in a post-game tweet:
The Celtics played at about 3/4 speed, with about 2/3 of their team, and won by 30.
Other stuff I noticed at the game:
*The game atmosphere in the Charlotte Arena was pretty dead. About the most exciting moments I can remember, where the crowd even pretended to buzz for a second, were when KG switched off onto Stephen Jackson 1-on-1, squared him up, then started clapping his hands like he does when he gets hyped on defense. The guy in the seat behind me buzzed with the crowd, saying to his friend, "Dude. I think he's calling him out. He's straight clapping at him, and Jack's just standing there. Do something, Jack!" Jackson held the ball about 3 seconds in triple-threat stance, eventually Rondo came over to double team, and the moment was over. Then, the other moment was the Semih alley-oop, when the crowd actually got loud for a second, but by then I think most of the Bobcats fans were gone and it was the Celtics fans getting krunk.
*The Bobcats as a team just seemed like they couldn't possibly care less, on up to their coach. That same guy behind me, during the stretch with the Celtics stretched it out a bit in the 2nd quarter, was like "Come on, Larry. At least get off the bench. Stand up. Yell...Do something?"
*Having 2 small children helps get around the arena. At the end, I wanted to go over to the tunnel where the players come off. Some of the ticket workers didn't want to let us, but I targeted an older woman (I was carrying my 4-year old and 2-year old) and she quietly let us past. We were about a row back, so we could see the players but not reach for high 5s. Pierce came out before the others and posed for pix for a second, and I probably could have gotten one with my cell but I had my arms full of little people. But the kids loved it, and it was a fun experience.
*Walking out of the arena, a group of Celts fans started a spontaneous "Beat LA!" chant in the lobby. Good times.
I could wish the Celtics/Bobcats games would be more competitive (I went to one 2 years ago when none of KG/Pierce/Allen even played and the Cs still won by like 30), but it was still a good way to spend a weekend night.
