Heat forward Udonis Haslem might miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left foot.

Haslem suffered the injury on Saturday and underwent the surgery on Tuesday.

He ruptured the Lisfranc ligament in his foot, which connects arch bones to the ones leading to his toes.

Haslem's recovery could take more than four months.

Huge loss for Miami, they really are in trouble now. I guess the curse that was put on Miami is working

I figured that might be the case when they kept using "out indefinitely" rather than giving any sort of time table.

Losing Haslem hurts in a lot of ways, the Heat's best lineup was with him in at the 4 and Bosh at the 5.

NOT GOOD!!! If his season is over, Miami lost it's best all-around role player, and the Celtics and the Heat won't play up to full strength when and if they against each other in the playoffs.

Considering Udonis was killing the Celtics that last game, this'll make destroying Miami all the easier.

Me too, I thought it was a negotiating ploy for getting Dampier on board.

I never saw Miami's realistic window as being this year - they'd need at least another MLE player to fill in the rotation - but this pretty much confirms it.

I don't root for injuries, and I like Haslem as a player, but this is good news for us.

If Haslem is indeed out for the season ... Can Miami apply for the disabled player exception?

Here is Larry Coon's summary

Quote
This exception allows a team which is over the cap to acquire a replacement for a disabled player who will be out for the remainder of that season (if the player is disabled between July 1 and November 30) or the following season (if the player is disabled after November 30).

This exception can also be granted in the event of a player's death. This exception can only be used to acquire one player. The maximum salary for the replacement player is 50% of the injured player's salary, or the average salary, whichever is less (see question number 25 for the definition of "average salary"). Approval from the league (based on a determination by an NBA-designated physician) is required for this exception to be used.

This exception can be used to sign a free agent, or to create room to accept a salary in trade. When used for trade, the team may acquire a player whose salary (including any trade bonus) is up to 100% of this exception plus $100,000 (not 125%). Also see question number 20 for more information on the availability and use of this exception.

If a player is disabled between July 1 and November 30, the team must acquire the replacement player within 45 days. If the player is disabled between December 1 and June 30, then the team has until October 1 to sign a replacement. If the disabled player comes back sooner than expected, then he may be activated immediately, and the replacement player is not affected. However, if the disabled player comes back before the exception is used, then the exception is lost.

It looks like they can. They exception would be small (50% of $3.5 million) though.

Is 1.75 million even bigger than the vet min salary for a guy of Dampier's tenure?

They won't need to use it on Dampier.

I'd presume they'd try to use it in a trade ($1.75 mil by 125% + $100k is a little under $2.29 million) to bring in another rotation quality player.

The player won't be anywhere near Haslem's caliber but that could net a solid rotation guy.

-----------------------------------------

I think Dampier gets around $1.35 million as 10+ year veteran minimum.

Dampier at C and Antione at backup PF for 15 min/gm.

= Headlines.

Better play?

Couldn't be worse.  Juwan Howard is the other option on the roster.  James Singleton is in China.  He would help them.

Singelton would be good. An upgrade over Howard.

It'd be nice to see him defensively alongside Wade and LeBron. Especially with someone like Dampier in the middle. A lot quickness, trapping and switching. Force some turnovers. Let Dampier be an anchor. Plug in Chalmers at the point or J.Jones on the wing.

A solid third string PF. Offers something different. Real athleticism and quickness. Help bring in a running game.

Very disappointed by Miami's lack of uptempo play given their star players.

Miami's an interesting dynamic. You didn't see their window as this year but James and Bosh clearly did. Do they have the patience to wait on their window? What happens if they go 2 years without reaching the finals? At what point do they (especially Bosh and James) decide they've had enough of sacrificing their numbers to try and win when they aren't getting where they want to go? I don't know they have the patience to wait for as long as it might take, as they were all convinced that they were headed for instant success.

Pretty much what I was thinking.  I'd love to have Singleton in Green (at VW's expense).  The Singleton/Dampier front would grab some serious rebounds, too.  Singleton's quickness would help compensate for Dampier's...

Why is he not in the league?

Why is he not in the league?

I am very surprised that Singleton isn't in the league. A good end of bench NBA level player. He would be useful on lots of different teams.

I presume his awful shooting display last season turned a lot of teams off him. 38.4% field goal percentage and a 45% true shooting percentage. Awful figures.

Anyway, I certainly consider him an NBA level player. Good defender and good rebounder. Someone should sign him.

As for the Celtics -- I liked Singleton as a Scalabrine replacement. That quick perimeter defensive big man role. He would have been good here in that role but Harangody took the open roster spot.

I'd rather use Von Wafer's spot on another wing player. Marquis Daniels is too injury prone to be the lone backup wing on the team.
