To say that Oden is just an average Center is just stupid. He's a phenomenal player, but he just can't stay healthy.
Look at his numbers when he was playing, dont quote me on this, but a previous poster on another blog had his stats somewhere around 20ppg, 10rpg and 3bpg. That was just a stint of 4-5 games, but his avg is still 10,8, and 3. That's just like Perks numbers except Oden gets more blocks and more points.

The question, though, is what kind of numbers he'll put up when he comes back. I don't see very many (if any) 20 point games from him in the next 2+ years (better known as our current window).

Who cares about 20 point games though? Greg Oden is a game changing rebounder and defender more than anything, those are the areas that his talents are most apt to effect the game.

I don't think it makes sense for us to take a flier on him, because other teams with more time and money are going to push his price out of what would be smart for a team that isn't rebuilding.

Clearly, but if he isn't the same player offensively after he's injured, why would you expect him to be the same rebounder or defender?

He might not be the same, but he was a potential MVP canidate down the line based on his play last year on a per minute basis.

I think he should still be able to be an impact player.

Be an impact player when? 2013? Even that's assuming a very good recovery and no further issues with either knee.

He could be an impact bench player next year (short minutes due to recovery/foul issues) and an impact starter the year after that.

Assuming he doesn't suffer yet another catastrophic injury :(

Shorter minutes won't do the trick. Look at KG now compared to a year ago. Would bringing him off the bench for fewer minutes have had a big impact on his mobility or explosiveness?

I meant that he wouldn't be ready for big minutes. He'll have been out of basketball for so long that his conditioning and instincts will get him in foul trouble and limit his effectiveness to shorter bursts.

But aside from that players generally play a lot better their 2nd season back than their first season. That puts Oden (possibly) making an impact after Ray, Shaq and (possibly) KG are gone.

Yeah, but we need that sort of talent to pair with Rondo.

At the expense of having Perk here for the next 2 years though?

Depends on how much money you think it will take to sign Perkins.

Because we're in win now mode, it doesn't make sense right now.

Won't he be an unrestricted free agent if Portland doesn't pick up his option?  I would love to take him on, but I wouldn't if I had to trade Perk.

Exactly.

Don’t trade anything for this guy. Just sign him.

i just read the article, and it seemed to indicate that oden will be a free agent next summer. did i misread it?

if he is a free agent, why bother talking about trading perk or anyone else for him? just wait, see how he heals, and pay the market price.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Last I read, Portland wasn't planning on making an offer to Oden this summer, so he should be unrestricted. And if he's smart, he'd come to a team like Boston where players have been able to rejuvenate their careers with a team oriented winning franchise.

So as much as I like Erden so far, would you rather have Erden,JO and BBD as the 3rd string Centers, or a healthy Oden?
Healthy Oden? How about trading for a young Bill Russell?
