I heard that and the emphasis he used struck me as a bit odd.  Though listening to what he said immediately afterward, discussing Oklahoma City and Utah, I wondered if it was a slip of the tongue and he meant the Western Conference, in which case he'd be absolutely correct.  The Lakers are by far the best team in the Western Conference.

Barkley did say last night that Kevin McHale was the best player that ever defended him, for whatever that's worth.

Yeah, he says that about twice every year about Kevin.

I think Barkley is entertaining, but not a good analyst. Ditto Kenny Smith I thought Greg Anthony was a very good analyst, but he is no longer on TV. Of the current TV guys, I think Legler and Barry are the best. I feel they are always prepared, and quickest to pick up on a changing trend.
Barkley also always says that the Celtics are the best all-time franchise by far.

He also said the Heat were gonna KILL us.

Hahaha.
He's said that pretty much every time we've played a LeBron lead team the past year.
I thought he picks us to lose against any team.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

  • You say when......
He is just looking at todays standings.....the Lakers didn't really beat the C's last year....Kobe took out Perk, Artest took out Ray A..that was diabolical, oh then artest gave rondo 10 stitches to the face.....the NBA lost the replays....big time scam. Barkley is a good announcer, usually wrong with most predictions..and a worse gambler..but always funny..!

People are looking for something that isnt there.

Barkley is doing his job, he's there to have a strong opinon about something that sparks a reaction from the people watching and by looking at what people write here when he talks about the Celtics, it seems like he's doing a very good job.

As long as he's stating a opinon on TV, you cant take it for anything else but TV

Maybe he hates the C's.  More likely though, he just has been watching the Lakers demolish absolutely everyone this season.

While I don't necessarily agree with his assessment, I have a hard time coming up with a very strong case against it, given just how dominant the Lakers had been (he said it before they lost their first game).

The Lakers are no doubt the second-best team in the NBA, easily, but they've also been playing (until the Denver game) a cupcake schedule. Barkley's fun to listen to, because of how he talks, and it's fun to mimic him, but other than that he's not worth listening to.

He's probably right about that one.

Barkley said the Lakers are the best team, BY FAR,in the NBA. What a joke. They've added talent, we've added talent. We didn't have Perk and we got pounded on the boards. We barely lost. Now L.A. is by far the best? Stupid, Charles.

I don't think this (charles hating the C's) is true. Charles Barkely is not the only guy saying the Lakers are dominant right now. Now, whether or not you think the Lakers are "that much" better than we are is up to debate. Bynum is out for them, Perkins is out for us. We added help, they added help. At the end of the day, they haven't lost to a bad team (Cleveland), but we have..and they won a championship, and we didn't.

If anyone that is allegedly impartial says any team besides the Lakers is the best team in the NBA, they're wrong. There is nothing to support it.

I make no pretensions of being impartial, but let's consider some facts that you didn't mention: the Lakers, with the exception of Denver, have played a bunch of dogs, and were within one basket of losing to the mediocre Rockets on opening night. Cleveland was a bad loss for Boston, but it was on the back end of a back-to-back, and not just any back-to-back, but the night after playing perhaps the most hyped and emotionally draining opener in NBA history. And the Lakers have had only one back-to-back to far. I'm willing to admit that the Lakers MIGHT be better at this point -- I'm not going to disrespect them -- but Boston's had more people out than L.A. (West, Perk and either O'Neal versus just Bynum), so I'm gonna say it's a draw until they play each other, or until one has a clearly better record than the other.

I don't think you're wrong, its just my opinion. In the same way that the Celtics were the best team in 2008-2009 until the Magic beat us, the Lakers are the best team until they either completely lay an egg for a significant part of the regular season, or until they lose in the playoffs. To me, that's what championships are for.

The Celtics were the best team in 2008-2009 until KG went down to injury. The Lakers are the best team in the NBA right now. Their record along with Celtic's way of letting teams back in the 4th quarter make them that til we fix these problems. Besides his opinion like nearly every other expert don't deserve the "he hates the Celtics" claim. We have some flaws that'll challenge our deserving #1 status. Geez, Kevin Love grabbed 30rbds, 1st player since Charles Barkley grabbed 33 rebounds in 1996.

Until Laker play a good team I think the judgement is still up in the air for the Lakers

No, he really does hate the Celtics.
Though he regularly says the Celtics are the best NBA franchise all time.

He clearly has no problem with the Celtics franchise based on all the praise he offers.

So if you believe he hates the Celtics, you must only be talking about our current lineup. Personally, I think some people are just too sensitive and build mountains out of mole hills, but who knows? Maybe he doesn't care for our current roster.

I think people might be a little bit to self-involved though to equate liking the Heat to hating the Celtics. Not everyone's world revolves around the Celtics.

Ditto, he really does hate the Cs.
More to the point-- who cares? Barkley has been irrelevant since the 90s.
