Tracy McGrady and Allen Iverson agree that all-star game selections are the best way to evaluate a player's performance.
Especially when there is fan voting.

**ANY** criteria for evaluating performance fails is certain cases. So what?
I haven't seen him play in Euro-League. I personally wouldn't use an all-star selection for any league I don't watch as proof of anything. (all-star selection frequently sucks for a variety of reasons)

Have you watched his league?
You wouldn't use his selection of proof of him not sucking while there? That is my only point.

Needless to say, our current evaluation of Semih is dependent upon our expectations.  If we thought he was going to be the next Hedo Turkoglu, we'd be screaming 'bust' right now.  Most of us thought he wouldn't see an NBA court during this season and since he appears to poised enough to fit in, makes occasionally impressive plays (offensively and defensively), and seems to have the BBIQ to play in the league, we are impressed.

But, as some have pointed out, we need a lot more than 4 games to draw conclusions.   I am not cringing when he walks on the court -- that's a good sign.

Needless to say, our current evaluation of Semih is dependent upon our expectations.

Our evaluation should be based on:
a) is Semih Erden a good use of the asset that was a second-round draft pick?
b) is Erden providing good value for the contract he signed?

He is a 60th (dead last) pick signed at the minimum. He'd be a net positive under both of your criteria if he could wave a towel without tripping on his own feet.

So basically does he provide more right now than Mikki Moore?
I think that's the question.

...or Kwame Brown, since that is who Danny was looking at early in the off-season. Sure, he is decent for the last pick in the draft, but I think that is giving him a pass. There have been plenty of undrafted players who have made an impact. As we move forward, I think it's fair to judge him on whether or not he will be a decent NBA player, and that still remains to be seen...good for him on making it this far...

Give him a year of 2 experience in the nba then compare him to Perk.  Perk is easily a better low post defender (possibly the best in nba).  But Erden is a better passer already, better ft shooter, rebounding up in the air, shot blocking perk, running the floor erden.  He's a great pick.  If he turns out to be a career backup, great pick.  To me he is already a better player than eric feinstein, greg kite and not far behind rick roby!

I knew Rick Robey...Rick Robey was a friend of mine... Semih Erden is no Rick Robey.

Maybe someday.

  • You say when......
You know  i love the E man...he is going to be really good and keep getting better.....post him up more and watch his confidence and production bloom....you show a man like that you believe in him, he'll come around for you.

We need more big men actually, because JO is not really dependable, and shaq....hurt, or hurting...The Bucks, and Dallas out big-ed us last night..BBD cannot really cover a big mobile scorer, but with 2 or 3 of him, we can wear them down, soooo, dump Wafer, and bring BACK Lasme......!

Erden was not a good free throw shooter in Turkey. So I'm not sure he'll keep his percentage up higher than Perk's.

I can't believe how solid Semih is...love another big man that is a good free throw shooter and can finish with either hand around the basket...also gives off some nice passes.

Erden's actually not a good free throw shooter.  I want to say his Turkish League career FT% is under 60%.

Theres no way that’s right.

He must like the NBA leather better.  ;D

He definitely has a nice release. I wonder if he just worked hard on it this summer, or if basketball in Turkey is more tiring.

It could be that he is streaky. 9-9 (his current FT shooting on the season) is pretty impressive. Perhaps he goes through a slump later on where he doubts his release and gets into a funk.

Doc clearly thinks he can shoot FTs, so he must look good in practice too. Guys can improve.

Maybe he misses on purpose in Europe with that widening lane since there is a better chance of offensive boards.

Please realize that this post isn't particularly serious apart from noting his good form and Doc's believe that he can shoot FTs.

Dear BballTim, I am Turkish, living in Boston for many years. Good fan of Boston Celtics. I have been a member of CelticsBlog for awhile and not the Forum. After reading this comment of yours, I just had to become a member to post this reply. I'm sure there are many people from different nationalities in these forums and when you post a remark you should consider the consequences. Have you ever been to Turkey and how come you feel the right to post such a thing? I'm sorry, but I find this extremely offensive and an ignorant remark to say the least and not least bit funny (if that was your point).
