Crazier things have happened.

If he puts up numbers of 14 PPG, 15 APG, 3 SPG, 50% FG%, 75% FT%, 3 TOPG, and plays 1st team All-Defense quality defense while being the best PG in the league? Why not.

LeBron's candidacy could be mitigated by who he plays with. Kobe is past his MVP years. Durant is probably not quite ready to get his string of MVPs he has coming to him and Rondo could be the best player on the one of the league's best teams.

Yeah, it probably won't happen but remember, Chris Paul was that close  just a few years ago. Its not impossible to think it could happen given numbers like above or better from the best player of a 65 win team.

I think if you have those numbers you listed his points per game need to increase to the 18 to 20 range then he would have it under wraps.

It's possible. I doubt he keeps up these numbers during the year, mainly because the guys around him will get injured or tired during the course of the season.

But right now, he is really the best point guard in the game and one of the best players in the league overall. Durant is supposed to be the favorite for MVP but it remains to be seen if the Thunder has the results needed for him to win the MVP (so far... it's not happening).

And although it's still very early it's impressive to see how Rondo has managed to keep an average of 15 assist per game!

I think it is way to early to call the M.V.P. race.

So far, I agree Rondo has been amazing.  Another amazing player, a rookie, Wall, is putting up big boy numbers, and Orlando Magic's Howard isn't too shabby, either.  Plenty more could probably be mentioned.  Like someone said...consistency, (and I would add even improvement) will be worth watching.  It is a long season.

The games between the Celts and the Heat this season may go  a long way towards determining MVP for the league, because Rondo and Lebron both look like strong early contenders.

"Chris Webber said Rondo is the MVP of the league right now. Thoughts?"

I don't know if Webber actually said that too or if he meant Kenny Smith, because I heard Kenny Smith say that last night, that Rondo was his MVP so far.

If Rondo keeps averaging 16 assists per game, which will be extremely hard to do, he certainly has to be in contention for MVP. However, the league loves guys that can score, and if Rondo can't get his scoring numbers up then that is going to hurt his chances. Even Nash averaged 16 and 19 the two years he won the mvp. I hope they look at it as who truly is most valuable to his team, but the office get distracted with the guys who put up the most points.

Rondo is going to have to up his scoring if he wants to keep getting so many assists.

Otherwise people will start giving him lanes to the hoop while cutting off passing lanes.

Either way I don't expect Rondo to win the MVP this year.

If Rondo averages 15-16 assists a game, that'd break the all-time record.  If he shoots well, gets some rebounds and steals, and scores in double digits on a 55+ win team, I'd say he's the MVP.

LeBron + Wade will cancel each other out, Kobe doesn't produce like he used to, and the Thunder aren't looking like they'll be good enough to give Durant a real shot.  Chris Paul would be real competition if New Orleans continues to surprise, though.

But as others have said I don't see it happening.

EDIT:  5 stars!!

Looking at the list the of MVPs in the past 20 years, the only PGs to win it were Iverson, Nash, and Magic

Iverson, clearly a SG, was putting up 30pg
Magic, a 1-5 player, was putting up 20+pg and 10+apg

Nash is the only relevant player in stats with 18 and 11/12 respectively for back to back MVPs.

In all fairness, Nash was great for his team with scoring and endless sick passes, but played no defense. Rondo can continue with the passing numbers, up his points to avg 15pg, and his defense should win him MVP in my opinion. B/c Nash barely avgd a steal per game on 1 of his MVP years, while Rondo is pushing for 3pg

Rondo should NOT be robbed if he keeps up the 12-15apg and ups his ppg to 15 and stays with 2-3 spg. RONDO 10-11 MVP!
Can't stop, Rondo!

I concur! TP.

If Rajon Rondo somehow wins the league MVP this season then I can't see the Boston Celtics losing in the playoffs, by any stretch of the imagination  ::)

I think he's officially put himself into the conversation with the start to the season he's had.
