Auction Help!?

I was just asked to be a last minute replacement in a fantasy hoops league, and their auction draft is tonight.  I've never drafted via auction in any league.

Can anyone point out any quick resource to prep for this draft tonight??  I plan on searching the net, but I thought it would help to ask in this forum as well.

Any help would be very appreciated.

I participated in my first live auction this season for fantasy football (via Yahoo!). It was a lot of fun.

The ability to bid up players you don't want makes for an interesting strategic component to live auctions. But you can get burned. I ended up with both Peyton and Brady as my QBs, and can only start one (and no one has made me a decent offer for either).

Is everyone planning to be there, or will you have some guys on auto-pick?

Do a mock draft on Yahoo, CBS or ESPN.  It will help alot.

My advice on drafting is to wait.  Don't get sucked to overbidding in the beginning. If you are knowledgeable about players you can find a lot of good players later.  Say the cap is 200..I would maybe spend 40 on one really good player 25-30 on another 2 and the rest should be cheaper.  If you go for 60-80 for the Lebrons of the world you might have a hard time getting you bang for your buck. In doing some recent drafts and mock drafts it seems like there is a point when no one has enough money left, if you can ride it out until then you can have all the power with some decent players.  It could backfire and you get no superstars but when you are talking fantasy what sounds better, Lebron at 70 or Iguodala at 30, Stephen Curry at 30 and someone like Bogut at 10.   Considering Iguodala stats are not that far off from Lebrons, which deal would you take.....Good luck!!!

Well, I know which one I'd pick 

Some things I picked up from the auction that's just finishing up:

- Most scoring systems seriously devalue big men.  A guy like Dwight Howard is still a stud, but there are very few top fantasy big men.  You're better off investing in wings and guards that can do some rebounding and shot-blocking, and look for cheap, efficient bigs to flesh out your roster.

- 3 pt shooting is overvalued.  A team with a lot of guys who can hit the 3 is probably going to do better than a team with more slashers and post players.  This is one reason why bigs are not that valuable.

- Look for guys who contribute in a lot of categories.  Iguodala, who Tim mentioned, doesn't score a ton but gets a good amount of rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals.  Guys with a diverse skill set tend to do better and are easier to plug into your lineup than specialists.
