Former Patriot Junior Seau arrested, drives off cliff (Boston.com)

Retired NFL linebacker Junior Seau was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence early this morning and was later involved in a car accident in Carlsbad, Calif., according to multiple reports.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Seau, who played for the Chargers, Dolphins and Patriots, was arrested in Oceanside, Calif., early this morning and booked into the Vista Detention Facility. He posted bail and was released.

According to 10News in San Diego, Seau, who was charged with felony spousal assault with injury, drove his Cadillac Escalade off a cliff in Carlsbad after he was released from custody, Carlsbad police said.

Additionally, a witness called 10News around 9 a.m. to report that she saw Seau drive a car off a cliff directly in front of her near Carlsbad Boulevard and Solamar Drive.

10News also published a photo that appears to show Seau's SUV at the bottom of a cliff near a beach while rescue workers attend to the scene.

Seau was pulled out of the vehicle with only cuts and bruises and taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, police said.

Seau played his final NFL season in 2009 for the Patriots, culminating a 20-year career.

Update, 2:26 p.m.: The Los Angeles Times printed the following statement from Oceanside police in its LA Now blog.

    Junior Seau was arrested for the alleged assault of his ... live-in girlfriend. The victim reportedly sustained minor injuries that did not require medical treatment. On October 17, 2010 at 10:13 p.m. police were dispatched to the Seau residence on South Strand in Oceanside to investigate the report of a domestic violence assault. The 25-year-old victim reported that Junior Seau assaulted her during a verbal argument. Seau was not at the residence when police arrived.

    Seau called the victim while police were on scene and spoke to the officers; he agreed to return to the home. Shortly after midnight Seau drove back to the scene and he was arrested without incident as he approached the residence.

Just to add, I'm always hesitant to pass judgment on situations like this until after all the facts are displayed. I learned through Tiger's situation that things aren't always as they seem during the initial report.
