"OK, listen," Perkins said, "I'm going to put it like this here: I can't do what Shaq is doing, and Shaq can't do what I do. I can't do what Jermaine does, and Jermaine can't do what I do. So the things that they bring to the table are different than what I bring to the table. See what I'm saying?

"At the end of the day you can say what you want, but I'm really the captain of the defense," he said. "And that won't change."

Good for Perk.  I love the confidence, and I love the acknowledgment that all three centers have a role.  He knows what his role is, and that's to defend the paint.  (Quibble, though:  isn't KG the captain of the defense?)

Yeah, it's good for him in some ways, but in other ways he seems like he's trying too hard to stake his claim.  In other words, this really might be getting under his skin.  Still, we might be able to turn Baby and one of our backup wings into a pretty darn good 3 if things play out right.  So our potential "problem" at center could be a blessing.  (Shaq could also go down for the year tomorrow, if you want to take a bleaker look at things.)

Perk sounds pretty insecure. He should shut up and just talk about how deep their are. I don't see the point in talking about the supposed limitations of your teammates like that.

I think having to rehab for so long is hard, I hope Perkins has this attitude every day as he works back.

Nice way to put things straight. He is right in his own way. Shaq and Jermaine are not going to take away from what he brings to the table.

Not sure what to make of Jermaine's offense. Not very reliable, and he is not nearly as active as Erden (or Perk). Nor is Shaq for that matter. To me Erden seems to bring a lot of what Perk does in a less refined manner. So will be good to have him until Perk comes back.

KG's the captain of the defense but Perk is the center of it.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I agree, the subject line isn't totally correct. Perk did say that he can't do what Shaq and J.O. can do, also. Not that he actually means it, but he said it - so I think people can lay off of him for being overconfident and just take him at face value. Meaning, they are pretty deep and versatile at the center position.

The first thing I thought was the same thing. He's not the captain of the defense, by a long shot. Rondo may be more important to the D also. But he is important, and he shouldn't feel the need to tell the media that.

We all know what the C's can do with a lineup of Rondo, Allen, Pierce, Garnett, and Perkins. Shaq and/or JO would have to do a heck of a lot to break that up.

Relax Perk. Get your knee 100% and then you worry about your minutes.

I don't think so.  He said it, and basically said their defense isn't as good as his, while acknowledging that parts of his game weren't as good as J.O.'s or Shaq's.

The quote is there, the context (such as is provided in the article) is there.  I don't think Perk or his quote is portrayed in a false light.

Perk has a chip on his shoulder, and thinks he's the best defensive center on the team.  I say, good for him.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
Sorry Perk, but I'm not entirely sure that's true.

1.) KG's the captain of the defense.

2.) Shaq does just about everything you do (Better) accept defend the pick and roll (That's when JO comes in).
