It's been an interesting couple of nights.  Despite the lackluster competition (and that's using the term lightly for the guys the Sixers and Nets have thrown at the C's the last two nights), we've had some nice extended glimpses at all of the key new members and returning vets except for J.O, that rookie they drafted in June (what was his name again?  ;) ). and an injured Perk.

My first and, ahem, biggest curiosity was seeing Shaq in a Celtics uniform.  Say what you want about Shaq at this stage of his career, but he is one of the All Time Greats and he came here to finish his career as a champ.  It's pretty cool to see him in green.

As for his performance, what you saw is what your gonna get, and it's not so bad.  He can still grab boards, and be a presence on the post.  He doesn't have the powerfully athletic offensive skills any longer, yet he can work his way to layups with sheer massiveness and strength.

So, besides the novelty of seeing Shaq in green, no big intrigue there.

After the big guy, I was most excited about seeing what Delonte brought to the mix.  Preseason is huge for Delonte to establish his role, so that he'd be ready to roll when his 10 game forced hiatus has expired.  Heck, that rest might do his back well.  He's always had tweaks here and there with back, hopefully not a big nagging thing this year.

I thought Delonte looked stiff, in both his back movement and his guard play in game 1.  A little tentative.  Game 2, despite his back still looking tight, his game loosened up significantly.  Really nice to see Delonte hitting jumpers, controlling the offense, and being a pest on defense.

I'm sold on Delonte.  Really happy to have him back, and hopefully he comes back ready to play in Game 11.

Shaq and Delonte were the guys I was looking forward to seeing the most.  I also want to see how the returnees looked.  You've got to feel good about all of the starters.  Garnett's looked rusty with the J, but no worries there.  KG will hit those, and he should have plenty of them to shoot this year.  A good chunk of Shaq'a assists this year will be fed KG's way out of the post.

Off the bench Big Baby & Robinson appear to be relishing their roles.  Daniels looks o be playing his way into some minutes.

The potential of the Celtics bench being one of the best benches ever doesn't seem too far fetched by season's end.  It will be interesting to see how much slicing and dicing Doc will have to do this year to keep that mix involved and effective.

Lots to be intrigued by, mostly though you need to be truly interested in just what Semih Erden's ceiling is.  The guy has looked pretty comfy out there, and has done an awful lot more right than wrong.  Yes, it's 2 days into the preseason.  Yes, the C's were playing scrubbish opponents.  But, wow!  Already a whole lot more from the Istanbulian.  He gives the Celts even more depth where they were so sorely lacking in last year - SIZE!

I'm excited about this team.  It should be a fun year.  Keep healthy, and they'll be beasts.

I believe I'm most intrigued by Semih out of all. I believe he is a keeper, and will contribute to the cause this year. Sure - he's still raw, and not a Kevin McHale (Yet), but he looks to have a lot of upside.

This is a contract year for Glen, so he intrigues me as well. JO, fresh out of MIA, has a lot to prove.

Shaq - I'm still shocked to see him in Green. It will be interesting to me to see how he fits in with maybe his most overall talented team ever.

DWest? Glad to have him back, and he certainly hasn't disappointed in these two games.

Yes - it's still pre-season. But I'd take our 2-0 start thus far over LA's 0-2 start ;D.

I would say Semih as well but since he probably isn't going to get the minutes, especially when Perk comes back, I would have to say the bench backcourt of West and Robinson.

I thought in the first game, both played very tenative and didn't seem to have great chemistry. But the second game was a whole different story as both shot and scored the ball effectively while still keeping the offense flowing.

In terms of the rotation, I am VERY intrigued to see how Doc handles all of these bigs ESPECIALLY when Perk comes back. We will be 6 deep at the C/PF positions. Someone out of Shaq/JO/BBD is going to have to take a huge hit in minutes.

BBD intrigues me the most as anyone here who knows me knows that.
But your post was very good and I certainly agree with most of it. Only more time will tell, of course, but the bench has me very excited. Now they are being touted as the best bench in the NBA.
I am really interested in Delonte West and loved his taking control last night, though worry about this back spasm thing.
The guy is just good and knows what he's doing. He seems to be meshing with the chemistry too.
Shaq looks pretty good. I do not expect him to be the 25 yr old Shaq just like I don't expect KG to, but they will contribute big and important plays.
The team as a whole just has me jittery with anticipation. It's going to be an excellent season. GO CELTICS

theres a lot to be excited about. i just hope doc keeps the minutes of the starters down during the season.

he seemed to love playing ray and rondo 45+ min a game last season and you could see what it did to ray in the playoffs. i think dwest will def let ray get much needed rest during games. as much as i wanna hope rondo's minutes will get cut down, they wont. doc is gonna drive him the entire year and nate will prob not get much time on the court.

in terms of the big guys, our centers will be more than rested come playoff time with both o'neals splitting time and maybe even getting erdin in there.

garnett will prob split time with big baby this year. doc hopefully keeps garnett to 25 mpg and lets bbd take care of the rest. its his contract year so i think he will produce.

our bench will be good enough if doc trusts them and gives them time on the court.

also, wafer should be cut. hes terrible

I am on the Semih Erden intrigue wagon, but also I think Shaq has been running the floor great. I know, I know it's only pre-season. Imagine if he could keep it up though?

Erden intrigues me as far as being a keeper and that is more than many of us were expecting.

But Shaq and West look ready to contribute to a title.  Baby has looked great off the bench.  KG is moving very well, and Paul is in awesome shape.

There really is a lot to be excited about.

Good post Redz.  TP.  I had very similar observations about the first two games.  I would say I'm most intrigued by Semih but that's only because my expectations for him were zero and he's done a lot of impressive stuff.

On the other end of things I would have to go and say I'm least intrigued by Von Wafer thus far...

Kevin Garnett.  He's the most important to us winning again.  His defense looks good but his shot hasn't been falling yet.  I'm curious to see how much of his old form he has gained.

Rondo's probably second.  He hasn't taken any shots yet.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

I'm intrigued by the new guys.  We pretty much know what the returnees will give us.  Semih has been much better than anticipated.  Delonte seems to have a more mature game after his couple of years absence (probably didn't hurt him at all getting that playoff experience with the Cavs).

Shaq has been pretty much as expected.  He'll be a handful for other teams second units, or probably will complement the first unit too, because he's a good passer, and can still bull his way to the cup.

Looking forward to seeing how Jermaine fits in.  He should easily be a better than average second unit center (if that's when he's playing).  He's really not that old yet, and he's got a lot to prove.  This was a guy that was a franchise player not all that long ago.

Harangody I think will be spending a lot of time up in Maine.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Bradley can do, although I expect him to be spending a lot of time in Maine too.

I'm intrigued by who's going to take that last roster spot.  Completely underwhelmed by Wafer so far.  Like what I'm seeing out of Lasme.  As of two games into the preseason, I'm hoping it'll be Lasme that gets that spot.

I'm intrigued by the Delonte / Nate back court.  I'm very hopeful that it's going to work out very well.

I'm also very interested in Marquis, especially his defense.  We need a legit PP backup, and I think that can be Marquis.

Yup.  I'm mostly interested to see if he can show enough to make Big Baby expendible.

I'm most intrigued by our big men. The Beef we have. Size has always been a huge factor in this league. I have been rooting for this team since the 80's and I am not sure I've ever seen a team with this many good to decent big men on a single roster.  The depth is straight crazy.  Maybe its because I was used to the Andrew Declerq type rosters of the past, I don't know.

Shaq, KG, Perk, O'neal, Davis, Erden.....Fouls are huge in this game.  We have a ton to use up now and depth across the board.  We also have guys that can draw fouls when their down on the block.

I think the key thing is probably identifying what rotations work well together, particularly with the second unit, rather than focusing on individual players. We know a a lot about most of these guys already (with the exception of Erden).

I for one am most interested in seeing a second unit with some offensive firepower and the ability to score in a hurry. With the age of our starting unit being a concern, a lot of their rest will depend on how often the second unit can quickly turn a mid-sized lead into a big one.
