Varejao got $50m and Noah gets $60m for 5 years. I really wonder what's going to happen with Perk.

Quote
DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Joakim Noah has agreed in principle to a five-year contract extension with the Chicago Bulls.

The deal is worth $60 million plus additional bonuses, Dan Fegan, one of Noah's agents, told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher.

Fair deal for both parts I think. Noah deserves this kind of money (kind of a bargain for a center nowadays), and the Bulls didn't overpay. Now we will see if their confidence in Noah is rewarded in the future.

Agreed - fair deal for both sides.

It looks like Jerry Reinsdorf has finally green lighted the Bulls to enter the luxury tax. Once they give Rose his extension on top of Boozer, Deng and Noah + a supporting cast, that should take them above the LTT. Good to see that happen ... he always said he'd be willing to pay the tax if he felt his team had a chance to compete for a title.

Ugh, I was hoping he wouldn't sign so he can sign with us. :(

Is this considered a bargain by everyone because it is less than a max contract? 12 mill a year seems a little much. I mean Noah is the kind of guy you want on your team, but he is hardly going to lead your team to the promised land.

As far as how this affects Perk, unless he goes out and has a monster playoffs (which will be tough), he will probably get considerably less - probably 8 mill a year.

Disagree.  Did you see Noah in the playoffs against the Celtics?  They did lose, but he was great in that series.  Bigs are a major factor in whether a team wins a 'ship or not.  We definitely beat LA last season if we had Noah.

I'm not sold on this being a good deal.  I suppose it's fair enough in a market where Amir Johnson gets 5 years, $34 million.  However, I wouldn't want Noah taking up 12+ million of my cap over the next few years.

He's too limited of a player in terms of offense; I think there are guys who can give you 85% of his production for a fraction of the price.  I can't help but get visions of Sam Dalembert when I think of this contract.

Of course, if I was Chicago I would have packaged Noah for Carmelo Anthony, and would have signed Erick Dampier in free agency.

You are speaking of a playoff series where the Cs were without the majority of their big men. I like Noah as a player, but not at a near max level.

Perk has pretty much been the 5th best player on the Celtics for these past three years and he has provided everything Noah ever could. 12 mill is much more money than your 5th best player should make and, even though the Bulls will be competitive, they are are hardly a championship-caliber team this point.

I see your point - but we wouldn't have beaten ORL with Noah.

I think this is an awful deal for the Bulls. There's no way that Noah is worth that much over that many years. It just goes to show you how awful the business side of the NBA really is. I'm with Roy on this one. The Bulls were dumb to not send Noah along with Deng to Denver for Carmelo. Then sign Dampier. That would have made them an unstoppable force in the east. Noah is a great hustle guy, but worth 60 mil over 5 years? Not in my eyes.

Extension for Noah probably means the Bulls aren't getting Carmelo.

Too much for Noah.  Not liking this deal for the Bulls.  They really should've made a run at 'Melo even if it would've meant sacrificing Noah.

I think its a decent deal for the Bulls. Big men get paid in the NBA, bigs of Noah's defensive/rebounding caliber aren't easy to find.

Yeahhh, unless Perkins were gonna leave us to go to the Bulls, I don't agree with giving away Noah for Carmelo. No matter how you slice it, Carmelo isn't worth that. Lebron's another thing, but all Carmelo does is score. Bulls don't need more scorers.

I mean, even if it's hindsight and maybe even short-term, think about it; you trade away Noah, and you're without your two starting big men to start the season, and one you have to wait 8 weeks to get back.

I mean, if you think Noah got too much money, that's fine, although I would like to know who the Bulls could've gotten instead for less money (as Roy so claims is plausible), unless you, I'll say it again, mean Perkins. But Noah isn't so expendable that you trade him AND Deng for Melo.

Terrible deal for the Bulls.  The chance of Noah getting more than that next summer is slim.  There are not going to be a ton of teams with cap space, and the new CBA could make that deal an absolute albatross.  They also make it nearly impossible to trade him now, basically locking them in to the roster they have for the foreseeable future.

It looks to me like the Bulls panicked for some reason, and perhaps Noah was grumbling after the trade rumors (which may have even been leaked by Noah's agent to boost his value a bit, and give them leverage).  They had another month to negotiate, and I have to imagine the longer they waited and played hard ball, the more the price would have gone down, since Noah had little to gain by holding out for more money, given the state of the CBA.  If they waited until the end of October, like Ainge did with Rondo, I would be shocked if Noah's agent didn't blink, and they would have gotten him for about $10 million (or more) less.

To me, this showed why Danny is so much better than 90% of the GM's in this league.  He understands that you can actually negotiate.  You don't have to just give the player everything they want...particularly when you hold their RFA status the next summer.

The tough thing about this is that it may mean the end of Perk's run in Boston.  There is no way Danny is going anywhere near that kind of money for Perk, and now I can't see Perk's agent not asking for something at least close to that range.  If Perk comes back in January or so, and his agent starts throwing out Noah like numbers when they talk extension, don't be surprised to see Perks name a LOT around the trade deadline.  Danny plays hardball, and Perk might be getting priced out of Boston.
