If not Parish, Mc Hale seems to be a logical choice to replace Cliff Ray, given his close relationship with Danny.

Talk about a serious demotion. I would say there is a .01 chance of McHale leaving broadcasting to become a minor assistant coach, and I'm generously rounding up on that .01.

I'd like to see The Chief here in Clifford Ray's spot.

Clifford will be missed if this does go down. He's had a positive influence on so many bigs. I even read somewhere that he trained up young Eric Dampier.

McHale is out of the question.  Vin Baker is also out of the question for different reasons.  Parish and Cowens would be good choices.

Yeah, I agree.  I think there is a chance he could be hired as some sort of "special assistant", where he works with the big men from time to time, but I don't see any chance he leaves Minnesota to work in Boston full time, and travel with the team, unless he is the head coach, or near the top of the front office.

Do the C's even need a big man coach anymore?  What can you teach KG, J.O. and Shaq at this age.  Big Baby and Perk are what they are, I don't see them becoming superstars any time soon.  KG, J.O. and Shaq should be good enough mentors.

Thanks Cliff, your training of Big Al landed us KG.  Good luck wherever you go.  (Clippers or Portland would be a good project)

....  as a matter of fact, Vitaly is.  He's on O'bie's bench in Indiana, right next to Walt McCarty.

McHale and Garnett haven’t really talked since KG left Minnesotta.

Don't know who wrote this, but found it interesting

Just spoke to Cliff. He wanted everyone in Boston to know how much he loved being a Celtic. People don't know that he was here for much of our run in the 80's since he was working with Robert Parish. Unfortunately for Cliff, teams always underestimate the benefit of a big man coach and the Celtics are no different.

He didn't want to say anything bad about the team, but I will say that the Celtics showed a distinct lack of class in this, just as they did last year with Leon Powe.

I didn't know it was a firing, to be honest.

Boston Celtics Clifford Ray May Be Leaving: His Mark On The Team Will Stay
Posted by rob.nelson
September 11, 2010

The Boston Celtics have an interesting issue. Normally a bench coach leaves a team and there are no issues. However, this time is different. The Boston Celtics might be losing one Clifford Ray. Clifford Ray is one of the unsung heroes of the Boston Celtics and half the fan base has zero idea who he is. Mr. Ray’s work is a huge reason why the 08 title banner is hanging from the historic rafters.

If you do not know his work, all you need to do is watch Kendrick Perkins in action. Remember how raw Perkins was on both ends of the floor in his first few years? The reason he is more polished is Cliff Ray. Ray was the one that worked tirelessly with Perkins on foot work on both ends of the floor. He is the one that taught Kendrick Perkins his low post moves. Cliff is the one that made Perkins into the defensive beast in the paint he is today. Not enough? Look at Glen Davis and his game. Davis was taught foot work and positioning by Clifford Ray and that is why despite being under sized, he can hold his own in the middle at both ends of the floor. Even guys like ex Celtics Leon Powe and Al Jefferson credit Ray with helping their games immensely. If Ray had not worked with Jefferson, maybe KG is not in Boston right now. Even the great Dwight Howard was once a disciple of Ray during Ray’s tenure in Orlando. Credit Robert Parrish as well as a drinker of the Ray Kool Aid. When they were teammates in Golden State, Ray worked him hard.

If Ray leaves, there will be a hole on the Celtics bench. I doubt that there is anyone quite like him. If he leaves I wish him the best. Every big play Perkins makes and every time Davis bulls into an opponent twice his size, think of Cliff Ray and smile. However, knowing his work lives on in Perkins and Davis will help him forever leave his mark on the Boston Celtics.
