Back in the old days, Delonte was being asked to be a starter and a guy to make things happen.  Now we are asking him to be a back-up.  He can play well enough to be a fringe starter on a good playoff team (see Cleveland).  I think he is going to be great for what we need him to do.

My two predictions are:

    a)  West turns out to be a better #2 PG than Nate
    b)  Von Wafer ends up being a great #2 SG

Being real, with all 2-guards we have signed on this team, Delonte will have to play like MJ to make this team, or somebody has to get injured badly.
I don't like Delonte, and I don't understand that people say he has a high IQ and talent, if he had both of those things he would be a all-star like Rondo, instead he changed 4 teams in 4 years.

Are you kidding with that first bit? Delonte's making the team. Doc and Danny both love him, plus he's a legit talent. He'll be your first two guard off the bench behind Ray, I'm betting on that. Wafer's the third stringer.

The only reason he doesn't have a guaranteed contract is because of his mental problems. If he loses it again THEN he'll be waived. But barring that, he's in for the long haul.

I agree with the first post here... 4 teams, 4 years... Thats not a good stat for a player and that has to be looked at. There is a reason that teams keep trading him... I expect Von Wafer to be in front of West big time. West will be lucky to make the team.

Not that Delonte doesn't have some issues, but your argument that Wafer will play ahead of Delonte *because* Delonte has bounced around a little is...  well, pretty silly.

Have you forgotten Von Wafer's career history?

16 games for the Lakers in '05 - '06
1 game for the Clippers in '06 - '07
21 games for Denver in '07 - '08
8 games for Portland, also in '07 - '08
63 games for Houston in '08 - '09
unknown number of games for his Greek team
0 games for whatever NBA team signed him to the 10-day contract last year

Delonte:
Three years in Boston, then traded to Seattle for RAY FREAKIN' ALLEN (and Danny has said, all along - not just recently - that he hated giving up Delonte in that deal)

Traded to Cleveland mid-season, as part of a major trade.  Seattle didn't dump Delonte, Cleveland wanted him.  Seattle also unloaded Szczerbiak in that deal, which I believe was their primary motivation.

Three seasons in Cleveland, but has his issues and gets traded to Minny.  Minny cuts him to save a lot of $$ and because they don't really need him.

Delonte was drafted in 2004, Wafer was drafter in 2005.  Delonte has played in 364 games for his career, over 10,000 minutes played.

Von Wafer?  On those six NBA teams that have written him a paycheck, he's appeared in only 109 games, for 1,452 minutes.  Total.

So...  which player has been bouncing around the league?

Delonte's gotten traded a couple times.  Wafer's gotten cut.

Delonte West is a better point guard than Nate Robinson and a better shooting guard than Von Wafer. He deserves to play ahead of either player at either position. I like him in that combo guard reserve role. Main guard off the bench.

Maybe I'm crazy but when Delonte was sent packing to Seattle it seemed that a lot of people on this board were extremely happy.

I know there were a few people on here who rooted for him on the Cavs and always wanted him back, but I always felt there were more anti-Wests rather than supporters. I feel like I'm the only one that thinks signing a mediocre, undersized, mentally unstable, guard is a bad idea... Am I alone on this?? I don't get it.

You are crazy. We were all sad to see Delonte get packaged for Ray and the draft pick that turned into Big Baby.

However, Ray's arrival certainly cast a shadow over Delonte's departure.

Nobody rooted for him on the Cavs, but we all wished him well...big difference.

Secretly we all still want to see Ryan Gomes and Al Jefferson return as well.

Delonte is an above mediocre bench player, he's certainly not undersized, and mentally unstable could be a bit of a stretch.

There are enough vets to make sure Delonte keeps his head on right, and if things don't work out then it's a non-guaranteed deal anyways.

Given that it's a non-guaranteed deal please don't forget how Delonte now has incentive to earn that contract. Good work Danny!

Also agree with the point that it was a bad move because it doesnt fill a need. We need a long athletic defensive type player to back up Pierce and other than Daniels...( Who has always been more of a two guard, I dont understand the post that said otherwise) we dont have that.
I disagree with the 4 team in 4 years comment. Yes elite players usually don't get traded much. However, if you're a middle tier player it shows that you are 1. A decent guy that people want or 2. Way overpaid and people are continually trying to move your salary. Delonte is in the first category.

I think he will end up being our main back up at the 2, With Wafer eventually playing some 3.

Always liked Delonte for leaving it all on the floor.  When did we all lose our youthful love for anyone who puts on the green?  Time to get out of the personal lives of players and go back to a simpler time.

Wow great post

How is 4 teams a bad stat when the Cavs, a contending team, wanted him and played him many minutes and the 4th team is his former team that wants him back.

Bringing back a player is hardly a negative.

I'll 3rd that, The only downside to Delonte is that he's potentially looney. Other than that he's a perfect bench player, and a decent starter. I hope he comes back the same player/person that left here.

Regarding the four teams in four seasons line, did people bring up that Matt Barnes has played for seven teams in seven seasons as a serious reason why the Celtics shouldn't want him?  Does anyone care that Eddie House played for seven teams in the five seasons prior to becoming a Celtic?

Delonte West is a role player and not someone you build a team around.  Players like that who make more than the minimum are often going to be included in trades to make salaries match up.

In a vacuum, Delonte West is probably about as useful as Glen Davis.  Depth is the only reason that Davis is more useful to Boston at this point.

talent-wise i think this is a good signing. solid signing. You don't often get a guy with his talent in his prime for an unguaranteed minimum. If he keeps his mental problems in check, he should be ahead of MD and Wafer on the depth chart for the BU 2 spot. MD and Wafer should fight it out for the BU 3 spot, and both players are pretty shaky prospects if you ask me.

i disagree that he's better than Nate Rob though. Nate is... pretty frickin talented if he gets his head on straight.
