If it were me I would first sign Delonte then later in December If Portland still had Rudy I would offer them Nate. Once we can trade Nate.

Upgrade both the pg and sf posisitions. thoughts?

I think Rudy is 6-6 185 and thus a shooting guard.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I sign Ime Udoka and hope.

We're in a bit of a good bind, but a bind nonetheless.

I think we're fine at the PG and SG positions. Signing Delonte AND getting Rudy F. would be adding to the already packed backcourt of Rondo/Ray (plus Nate, Avery, Wafer, Marquis?)
I put Marquis at the 2 because he's a bit undersized in weight for the 3

That leaves us with no legitimate backup for Pierce. If I had to pick one, obviously go with Rudy F. at the 2 and move Wafer over to the 3. But I wouldn't pick up Rudy because he's going to play overseas anyways - "Fernandez grew disgruntled as his role diminished in his second NBA season, and he told several Spanish news organizations earlier this summer that he wants to be traded or released from his contract so he can return to Spain to play professionally."

My pickups would be one of either (all in order of preference):
1) trade Big Baby/Marquis Daniels for Shane Battier, Tayshaun Prince, Luc Mbah Moute + someone else, Tyrus Thomas
or
2) Ime Udoka, Rodney Carney, Jarvis Hayes, Larry Hughes, Jerry Stackhouse, Stephen Graham,

(1) I would sign Rodney Carney

(2) Then make a hard play for Delonte West but I wouldn't be overly optimistic. I expect West to get better offers (playing time wise) elsewhere. If Delonte did come, then I'd look to move Nate Robinson during the season.

(3) I would also be looking to move next year's first round draft pick in an effort to pickup an upgrade my first choice backup wing. Preferably a small forward. Possibly including Glen Davis depending on the quality of that small forward.

(4) I would also look to sign James Singleton to replace Brian Scalabrine.

Agreed, also I would take a look at Damien Wilkens and Bobby Simmons.

We really need another competent defensive player at the SF. I am not comfortable with Tony Gaffney or any other Summer League hopeful in that role.

  • Another undersized Celtic...
I would look at guys who could contribute with limited minutes behind Pierce, who could play a bigger role if Pierce needed to sit out some games--why not Jerry Stackhouse for 1 season? Maybe even Tim Thomas or Devean George for the people who are looking at Bobby Simmons. I also think the Flip Murray, although not a 3, could still come and be a legit scoring option in any minutes you give him--he shoots like an uzi, but a fairly high % one. And if we're looking at Delonte, than I'd rather take on Rafaer Alston or Earl Watson--guys with experience that are just trying to latch on to a team and not expecting long contracts. They can also play solid PG minutes in a half court game, which Rondo hasn't quite figured out against certain zone defenses or when the lane is clogged up.

Which guaranteed contracts would you cut in that scenario?  I think we've got 14 guaranteed deals on the roster right now.  Would you get rid of Erden and/or Harangody?

I would get rid of Erden to sign James Singleton.

I'd be willing to dump Harangody if Delonte West agreed to join too.

I'd offer non-guaranteed deals to Jarvis Hayes, Bobby Simmons, and Rodney Carney, and see who would accept one.

In December, I'd reassess.  If I thought the backup SF was still a huge liability, I'd cut whoever the backup was, and would look to move BBD for a legit SF.  I'd then attempt contact Rasheed, and see if he'd be interested in getting ready for a February return.

sounds like a good plan. tp

Definitely best option available IMO. He put up 30 or 40 one time last season. Great player that has history with Ray from Seattle. Can shoot and long to play solid D at SF/SG. Sign him
Can't stop, Rondo!

Option 1:

I'd work the phones with Portland and NY. NY wants to give up Chandler for Rudy? Portland wants a future 1st instead of Chandler? I'd tell them this is the deal on the table:

NY gets Rudy
Portland gets Glen Davis and 2011 1st rounder
Boston gets Cunningham, Chandler, Pendergraph, with an understanding that, being over the roster limit, Pendergraph will be cut and can return to Portland in 30 days (he's on a minimum contract anyway...he doesn't even need to make the flight to Boston).

Option 2:
If Portland was not budging, and wanted a better first rounder, I'd call Memphis:
-So, Wallace, the 12th round rookie slot is too expensive for you? Here are some options. (note-it's a little tricky because Bradley has signed a contract, so he has a salary, while Henry is just no-money rights)

Lineup:
Rondo/Nate/Bradley
Allen/Daniels/Wafer
Pierce/Chandler
KG/Chandler/Cunningham/Harangody
Shaq/JO/[Perk]/Erden

1. Bradley for Haddadi or Darell Arthur or Demarre Carrol and Henry's rights. Yeah, it's basically a swap of 12th and 19th picks, but you clearly have some buyer's remorse and don't want to pay 12th pick money to back up Rudy Gay; how about 19th pick money to back up Conley/May?

Lineup:
Rondo/Nate
Allen/Daniels/Wafer
Pierce/Henry
KG/Davis/Harangody
Shaq/JO/[Perk]/Erden/Haddadi

2. Davis and future first for Henry's rights, Haddadi, and Memphis's choice of Demarre Carroll, Sam Young, or Darell Arthur. Boston would only be able to keep Henry plus one other player roster-wise, so one of those other players would be cut; they're just salary filler.

Lineup:
Rondo/Nate/Bradley
Allen/Daniels/Wafer
Pierce/Henry
KG/Arthur-or-Carrol/Harangody
Shaq/JO/[Perk]/Erden

Option 3.
I'd move on to Phoenix. I'd tell them they have Childress, Clark, Hill, Dudley, Richardson, Turkoglu, as true sg/sf's plus Janning, Griffin, and Lawal, all of whom can play SF or SG. I'd remind them that their real bigs are Frye, Lopez, and Warrick...Not exactly a big group of tough bangers (outside of lopez, who has had injury issues. So I'd offer them Davis for Dudley straight up (they have a trade exception) or Davis for Dudley and Griffin if they didn't want to dip into their exception. I'd then offer the vet min to Amundson, Joe Smith, Ike Diogu, in that order.

Lineup:
Rondo/Nate/Bradley
Allen/Daniels/Wafer
Pierce/Dudley
KG/Amundson-or-Joe Smith-or-Ike Diogu/Dudley/Harangody
Shaq/JO/[Perk]/Erden

Option 4.
Call Toronto, see if they'd bite on Davis for Julian Wright, then go after the same PF trio:

Lineup:
Rondo/Nate/Bradley
Allen/Daniels/Wafer
Pierce/Wright
KG/Amundson-or-Joe Smith-or-Ike Diogu/Harangody
Shaq/JO/[Perk]/Erden

Option 5.
Failing those, I'd offer the vet min in the following order:
-Carney
-Simmons
-Hayes
-Wilkens
-Udoka
-Tim Thomas
-Stackhouse

I like Julian Wright's potential, but Baby's probably worth more.  Oh and Lawal cannot play SF.

Other than that, nice ideas, nice rationales.
