Rudy wants Europe, too late to grab him now?

There's no way in the world he'll want to go to Europe if he can stay in the NBA.

well, he is originally from Europe. This isn't like Shaq who's lived his entire life in the US and due to a lack of options is going to play overseas. Rudy lived and played in Spain, is currently playing overseas, and could really go back to Spain (i'm assuming) where 1) he could get a lot more PT, which seems to be what's really important to him and 2) probably get more money, which is important to everyone.

I think it's a bit of a bluff, but at the same time, do the Celtics want to give up a #1 for a guy who has talked repeatedly about bolting for Europe?

If the Celtics were willing to do so I think he'd be a C already.

I've heard more that Cho wants more than a late 1st and is holding out.

If Baby, Erden and our 1st could bring back Rudy and Portland's two 2nd year bigs, Cunningham and Pendergraph, I'd be all over that. 

Baby gives Portland an excellent complement to Marcus Camby off the bench, and reliable big depth for that injury prone big rotation.

Cunningham was a fantastic mid-range guy as a rookie, leading all power forwards in FG% from 16-23 feet (48% on over 120 attempts on the season).  Also a comparable rebounder to Baby.  I think he could step right in and back-up KG until Perk comes back.

perhaps. And i guess that's why Rudy F agreed on taking less money to play in the NBA in the first place. To prove himself and all that. But i don't think going back to Europe is that bad of an alternative for him. I'd say this is a pretty credible threat/bluff.

A lot of Europeans also don't like the style of play here, and want to be back with family and friends. Places like Barcelona? They're beautiful. It's why Rubio's not in the NBA yet. It's why Juan Carlos Navarro left (no offense to anyone from there, but Barcelona > Memphis), and why Europeans leave every year.

It may just be bluffing, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did leave. He's still young though, so if he did, he'd eventually be back.

True, but several of Rudy's teammates on the Spanish national team have left / foregone the NBA, including Sergio Rodriguez, J.C. Navarro, and Fran Vazquez.  It wouldn't shock me at all if he left, especially if he could make more money back in Europe.

The only way he'll return to Spain is if he's wasting away on someone's bench and isn't able to get a chance to play elsewhere (in a larger role) in the NBA.

Rudy Fernandez has zero leverage here. No FIBA team can sign him while he has an NBA contract. The only way out of his deal is by mutual agreement which should (will?) not happen because he is a valuable player + trade commodity.

He has two years left on his deal which gives an team that acquires him plenty of time to convince him that his future lies the NBA with them. No team should (some will be, those are badly run teams) be put off by Rudy's current stance. Finally, any team that is giving up a trade package like what Portland are likely asking for should be doing so with the idea of making Rudy Fernandez a long term starter.

You're right on Who.  I think Rudy is saying this now because he expected to be traded by Portland by this point.  I think Portland is holding out for more than a single first round pick.  He can't leave though, so he will remain here, he has no leverage.

I think he gets traded soon.  Hopefully here, I think it's a definite possibility.

Rudy probably would rather play in Spain than Portland, but in a good situation like he would have in Boston I think he'd be happy.  He just doesn't want to go back to the Blazers and Cho is trying to get the most he can for him.

Right now, it is clear that Portland is asking for way to much.

Agreed.  In any case, Rudy's got no leverage.  I suppose he can pout and not play b-ball for the next couple years until the contract runs out, then return to Europe.  But probably the best outcome for him would be a trade to Toronto, where he'd be surrounded by other European players and be able to start.

I suspect that Portland wants Baby Davis as well, and Danny is not willing to give him up, recognizing that Glen is a key cog in our championship aspirations these next two years.
