In light of the recent (possibly close) rumors of TMac to the Pistons, it occurs to me at this point that this guy was in discussions for one of the best players in the NBA in his prime. He was one of the most dynamic playmakers in the league and certainly was a crowd pleasers. Now, he's a bit of a running joke, partially due to injuries but mostly due to injuries.

McGrady was a great talent who never was able to lead a team out of the first round by himself. His prime was during the same years of Kobe's, Paul's - players once considered his peers. Now, he's forced to accept a vet minimum from a non-contender just to have a job. Undoubtedly, his career will go down as one of the most disappointing in NBA history.

Is there anyone else that is more disappointing historically than TMac? I can't think of anyone. Derrick Coleman comes to mind. I'm not counting busts such as Kwame and Gerald - players that came into the league and just never produced. I'm talking about guys who actually had GREAT talent, showed it in the league and fizzled out. Keith Van Horn is another good example - just not to the same level as McGrady.

Any other ideas?

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Len Bias has to be number one.

Eddie Griffin also.

Other guys...Derrick Coleman, Sam Bowie (not sam's fault, but injuries are disappointing.) Kwame Brown, Darko Milicic....it goes on. Quite a few of them are a lot more disappointing than T-Mac in my mind.

EDIT: re-read your initial post, should have done that first...apologies.

Well in that case..Derrick Coleman should be high up there. Danny Manning...umm...Chris Webber..

1) Len Bias

2)  Derrick Coleman wasted more talent on the court then any other player.  A strong 6'10 guy who could do everything but care about his effort

3) Vin Baker.  All star to drunk

4) Kemp.  High flying dunker to 300 lb slug.

5)  Gerald Green.

Surprised Antoine Walker hasn't been said yet.

Agree on Baker and Kemp.

EDIT: Also agree on Grant Hill....which saddens me. That guy was amazing. He was absolutely poised to take Jordan's title as best player in the league.

Hill was an injury problem, not a waste of talent.

Should Barkley be on this list? I was just reading Bill Simmons big book on basketball (awesome), and he had some good stories about Chuck...how the guy just didn't take care of his body as he was hitting his prime.

I disagree with Webber. He is a borderline HOFer.

Most people except us older guys won't know this name but it has to be LaRue Martin. He was a number one pick in 1972 and center from Loyola that gave UCLA's vaunted Bill Walton everything he could handle in their games in the early 70's.

He was a complete and utter NBA flop on a scale bigger than Darko and Kwame. So much of a flop that 2 years later Portland, the team that drafted him because he played so well versus college superstar player Bill Walton, again got the number one pick and ended up taking.....that's right....Bill Walton.

He is also a guy who couldn't quite manage to put his ego behind him, and he should've been better for longer.

I know, but the title says most disappointing players. He was disappointing with not being able to get healthy

I would have to say Stephon Marbury has to be up there. Physically he could have been one of the best PGs if not for his mental issues.

I'll have to second this, because people thought he'd be the next Michael Jordan, except for the Detroit Pistons. That never happened.
