There's a surprising amount of discussion related to non-first rounders going on. I can't remember a lot of pre-draft discussion in years past related to mid-rounders.
I think that without knowing which guys are on the board and where your team is, there isn't much point in it.
At this point in the draft, the picks are just "numbers"...if you're wheeling and dealing like a mad man you're as likely to end up screwing yourself beyond repair as you are setting up a winning franchise.
I disagree with this
I think if you do your homework there's a pretty good chance you can see who will fall where for the most part. I have talent tiers worked out and feel that at a certain level the talent drops off and if I can acquire more picks before that drop off the chances I get someone in the talent tier I want will be there. And if in certain tiers I don't want players then I trade out of them. Rounds are inconsequential.
The only question becomes, if you'd waited could that player potentially have slipped to you, without having to give up additional assets?
My thought is, if you're comfortable with the value you're giving / getting, then there's nothing wrong with pulling the trigger early. However, I do think that teams get a better return for most of their picks when other GMs can see the value that is left on the board.
Also, tiers are pretty subjective. For instance, Fafnir and I were talking about first round talent, and he would choose guys in the first that I wouldn't take until the third, etc. With 30 GMs, it truly does become "one GM's trash is another GM's treasure". Guys will slide, just like every year, and others will be picked way too soon.
