I thought we did this before, but I looked and I think it was a Celts thread.

I have to go with Shawn Crable.  3rd rnd pick who got hurt and never saw the field.

Nope. There wasn’t really much expected of him, and I still have faith that Crable can be a player in this league. He’s just too good of a football player.

C'mon, a third rounder is your biggest Pats bust ever?

What about guys like Hart Lee Dykes, Eugene Chung, and Adrian Klemm?

Even of recent vintage, Chad Jackson.

Need to distinguish between guys that didn't contribute because of injury and those that didn't contribute because they just weren't good enough, or fast enough, or smart enough, or tough enough.  Injuries are 99% bad luck - they don't tell you anything about the scouting process.  Hell, was Robert Edwards a draft bust because he blew out his knee after his rookie season?

The other stuff is what you'd hope to pick up in the whole draft process, that's what you want to look at.

Third rounders aren't considered a sure thing, anyway.

yeah, but didn't Klemm and Chung make starts? And Chad J I think caught a couple passes, granted he was a 2nd rounder.

They actually made it to the field.

R Edwards ran for a thousand plus yards his rookie year and got injured in a total freak accident and despite almost having his leg cut off still made it back to the league for a cup of coffee.

I just can't remember anything like Crable. Made me feel like a fool for telling people his return along with Tyrone mcKenzie and the drafting of the 2 Gators would make us better at the position. It's even worse that he was at a position of need.

Granted he wasn't a 1rst like Chris Canty and Tebucky Jones, but those guys I think made starts.

Clearly not a bust because he's filled a position of need for us for the last 4 years.  But among our first round picks, of the last 10 years, it's gotta be Laurence Maroney.

He's the only one who year in, year out, failed to live up to (my) expectations.

BTW is Ben Watson still with the team?

No way, he produced something at least. There have been several 1st round picks that have done nothing.

Yeah, although he at least was a pretty good kick returner.  Can't help but make you nervous when they draft wideouts in the first couple rounds!

Jackson's what I mean by a real bust, a guy who did have a few injury issues but that just didn't seem to be tough or mature enough to overcome those.  No indication that Crable's issues were anything more than physical; that sucks, but it's not an indictment of either the Pats' drafting or Crable himself.

Jackson's a guy that, if I remember correctly, had a few questions raised about his maturity when he was drafted.  Showed a lot of flashed when the pads were off, but has never translated that talent into on-field success, for reasons that appear to be entirely his own.  Not figuring out that the kid wasn't mature enough to put in the work - well, that's a knock against the Pats for drafting him and makes him, in my book, the prototypical draft bust.

Kenneth Sims. Given that he was the #1 pick in the draft and was a hugely underwhelming player and that such players as Marcus Allen, Mike Munchak, Gerald Riggs, Chip Banks and Luis Sharpe were there and available makes it all that much worse.

The Pats had a great draft that year getting Lester Williams, Andre Tippett, Fred Marion, Cedric Jones Clayton Weishuhn and others that shaped the 1986 Superbowl XX team but Kenneth Sims was a massive disappointment and probably the Pat's biggest bust given that he was a number one pick and was expected to be the next massively dominant defensive end in the NFL. To give those youngsters an idea, he was regarded as highly as Bruce Smith coming out of college.

Kenneth Sims in a landslide!!!

Hart Lee Dykes and Chris Canty....first round flops

Crable was a third rounder so can't approach these three or Chad Jackson (2nd rd)

People are soo quick to forget what Maroney did for this team in 2007.  He carried us during the end of the regular season and had a great first two games of the playoffs.

Also, last year except for the fumbling problem, which had never been an issue before, he was running phenomenally.  I have always been a lo-mo fan.  If he runs well this offense is 10 times better.
