Wouldn't giving Perk a 1 year extenstion right now be wise? We'd get him at a lower rate, it would align his contract with KG, Nate, Ray and Sheed, and it would be a nice gesture towards a player that went to war for us.

Why would Perkins take a one year extension right now? Unless he's being offered a heck of a lot more than I'd consider a bargain. I'm talking 8-10 million or so.

He'll certainly be better off rehabing and trying to get a new deal after he's shown he is healthy.

offer him a billion dollars, they won't play so he won't ever get the money anyway with the lockout

Obviously he would take a year extension at a lower rate now for insurance. He doesn't, nor do we, know he's better off rehabbing and then signing a new deal after that. What if he's never the same? What if a hard cap is installed or other dramatic negatives impact player salary during the CBA negotiations? You project him at $8 to $10 million, and I'd be with you if it was pre-injury and the same CBA. It's not and that's too high.

Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

But what if he can't show he's healthy?  It wouldn't be a dumb decision by Perk to sign a 1 yr 5M extension.  He gets that guaranteed if he doesn't come back healthy.  And if he does come back healthy, he probably won't play 100%.  So in this situation, he'll get to play a whole season at 100% then use that as contract bargaining leverage as opposed to a few months at less than 100%.

Hmm ... I'd feel pretty confident about Perk getting a one year $5 million offer next summer even if he failed to prove his fitness next season.

I see no upside here for Perkins.

Perk, being a young player in a contract year, wont be looking for a one year contract. He's going to look for some long term security.

I agree, if we offered 1 year at like 8 or more million then I think Perk might take it, but 5 million, I don't see the point.

I don't think that's so obvious.  I think Perk will get a long term deal for at least the MLE, even if he doesn't return at all this season (assuming there are no major complications, just a longer rehab than expected).  He would be giving up a ton of guaranteed money to sign a one year extension right now.  If he returns as expected, and plays decently, he will likely be looking at 5 years/$35 million on the low end next summer, and could get much more than that.

Unless the injury is much worse than reported (in which case Ainge wouldn't want to sign him anyways), then Perk would be stupid to take any deal right now, unless the C's blow him away.

I still prefer to trade Perkins in a a deal with Sheed for Okafor. Maybe NO would do that deal.

Okafor is healthy, and is a better match with Rondo going forard post-Big 3. Okafor is also a high character guy, good rebounder and shot blocker. I think Clifford Ray would do wonders for his game.

A one year extension doesn't make sense.

So he can get healthier and be a FA one year later?

Only sign him to a long term extension (3 or more years) at a discount.

$5 million would put him on roughly the same pay scale as the following big men:

Mohammed
Diop
Maxiell
Gadzuric
Brad Miller
Songaila
Krstic
Reggie Evans

Even if Perk comes back an absolute shell of his former self, and shows very little promise for regaining his former level, he will still be outperforming most of these guys. $5 million is almost certainly below what he'd be able to get on the open market even if he really struggles after coming back. And if he's 70-80% of the player he was this year, he will be worth significantly more than that.
