Daniels averaged the following numbers the season before he joined us:

GP   54
MPG 31.3
FG% 45.1
FT% 72.1
PPG 13.6
RPG 4.6
APG 2.1
SPG 1.1
TPG 1.7

Howard averaged the following numbers last season:

GP 35
MPG 26.2
FG% 40.5
FT% 78.4
PPG 12.7
RPG 3.6
APG 1.4
SPG 0.7
TPG 1.3

Daniels injury concerns are a valid issue, but not anymore than Howard, who has missed 77 games the last two years, and is just 5 months removed from tearing his ACL. Not to mention that Daniels re-signed for a modest 2.5M, while Howard is expected to command at least mid-level type money.

If we do land Howard, I wouldn't be surprised to see Daniels and Howard have the same type situation play out as Daniels and TA did. The afterthought/returning player outperforms the popular signee and then there are a bunch of posts next summer on how losing Daniels would be a major mistake. The irony.

They are very good friends but.  I think their games are very similar.  At his peak Howard is the more dynamic and versatile scorer, but there's not a lot to seperate them.  That's why I don't know that having them both makes a lot of sense except maybe from a chemistry standpoint.

Exactly. I think they are very similar players in terms of production, but Howard is/was the more athletic player. However, how much of his athleticism will be hampered with the knee injury concerns me. That's why I find it odd that re-signing Daniels isn't thought of as highly as a Howard acquisition would be.

Well, a couple things:

Marquis has never been (nor ever will be) an All-Star.  Since Josh has, that automatically raises the perception of him.

Also, last season Josh Howard had one of the worst seasons of his career when he averaged around 12 ppg etc.  Marquis best season ever was the one before he came to the C's when he averaged around 13 ppg.  Clearly, the ceiling for each player seems to be drastically different.  However, how good they are relative to each other at this point in their careers is a different matter (we don't really know for sure).

Also, if I'm not mistaken Josh Howard at least has something of a jump shot - though not a great one.  Marquis has practically no jump shot to speak of.  He doesn't spread the floor at all; he's a pure slasher / post-up player.  The last couple of seasons, the Celtics have desperately missed a wing player with good size and defensive ability who can actually hit an open jump shot (basically what Posey gave them).
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.
