There are many different types of passes.
Passes which create easy shots near the hoop, midrange shots, long shot attempts (three pointers). Passes which are straight forward (hitting a shooter like Ray coming off a screen) to passes which require a huge amount of creativity and vision to pull off.
Some passes rely on pace and pushing the ball in transition (Magic Johnson) to dribble penetration (Stephon Marbury) to more of a setup guard (Jose Calderon) who fires low risk passes from the top of the key.
Some passes are intended to put offensive players in positions to make plays. To set Pierce up for an isolation or Garnett on a post up. Others are intended to set up players to finish plays, for Tyson Chandler to grab an alley-oop and flush it home or James Posey to hit a catch and shoot three pointer.

I've always felt Chris Paul has been overrated as a passer.
He is a terrific playmaker (putting players in positions to finish plays), the best playmaker in the league, but I've always considered players like Deron Williams + Steve Nash to be more well-rounded and consequently superior passers. I would also consider Rajon Rondo to be a superior overall passer to Chris Paul.
-----------------------------------------------------
That all said, I think a passer of Chris Paul's nature -- the best playmaking PG in the league -- is the best fit for this team due to the Big Three's declining ability to create their own offense.
I think Chris Paul's playmaking is a better fit for them and for the supporting cast than Rondo's more well-rounded passing.
That is one of the main reasons I'd love to see Paul here.
