Another look at Miami's depth

Miami is close to adding Juwan Howard, Jamal Magloire, and Carlos Arroyo.  That brings their roster to:

C: J. Anthony / Big Z / Magloire / D. Pittman (r)
PF: Bosh / Haslem / J. Howard / J. Varnado (r)
SF: Lebron / M. Miller / Da'Sean Butler (r)
SG: D. Wade
PG: Chalmers / Arroyo

I think Varnado and Butler are still unsigned, and I'm not sure if Miami expects to bring them in.  Assuming they do, that will place the Heat's roster at 14 players, and thus nearly complete.

What do you think?  Is this team still perceived to be paper thin?  Guys like Howard, Magloire, and Arroyo don't scare me, but all are okay depth.  The one weakness is at backup wing; Miller may be forced to the bench by default, as nobody else on the team can really defend the 2/3.

Currently, the Miami bench overall is a weakness, but is it a big enough one to prevent them from a title?

I am pretty impressed with the roster they have put together so quickly, given the salary limitations.  The key will be how this team defends. Points will come pretty easily. Don't know if they will be able to do that very well.

The supporting cast is very good.

Need to upgrade Joel Anthony (sometime in the future) in order to build an excellent supporting cast.

I think a bench needs only three players -- a big, a wing and a guard -- to build a rotation.

(1) Main backup big man = Haslem = top 10 player?
(2) Lead Backup Wing = Miller = top 5?
(3) Main backup guard = Arroyo = below average but serviceable? 16-22nd range?

That would be my initial estimate of their ranks lead wide in that position/role.

Depth is inadequate.

And that's assuming - which you cannot - that the club has any remote chance at developing a chemistry. Basketball is a team game. FAR too many casual fans think titles are won by accumulating the best collection of basketball cards. They would be wrong.

You should examine the track record of James and his ego, Wade and his ego, and Bosh and his soft, soft, soft career. Don't let ESPN tell you what to think.

I tend to take Coach K more seriously than ESPN, and he's on the record indicting James ability to tone his game and his ego down for anyone.

they are the team to beat, but are beatable yes.

depth will develop based off of how the team plays

MJ's teams didn't have depth in the sense that if you took him (and Pippen) off the teams they would have been horrid - the benches were made because MJ was the man and drew double and triple teams and specialists could come in and shine

A guy like Reggie Evans on this heat team would scare the poo out of me because there would be no pressure on him - just go out and get boards

Miami's small lineup is what is really scary:

C...Bosh
PF...LeBron
SF...Miller
SG...Wade
pg...Chalmers

They will blow teams out of the water with that unit.

Maybe I am just a hater, but I still see Center and Point Guards as major problems for them. I would have been more impressed to see them bring back Jermaine O'neal or even Brad miller instead of Mike Miller and then signing a less expensive wing like Tony Allen. Big Z should not be counted on for anything, he is one injury away from retirement and is 35 years old. Arroyo I am not sure why he is in the league. Chalmers was so bad at PG in the playoffs they had to have Wade bring up the ball. Then we have Juwan Howard? Magloire? Magloire has been in free fall for the last 4 seasons. Howard had a nice season for the blazers, but turns 38 during the season. No wonder Penny thinks they might sign them.

I think everyone can agree that Miami wont have a great bench this year but looking at Orlando and the Lakers that could be added opon with 1-2 years of free agency.

What i would like to debate, is not what they would/should do now.. but what would YOU do, in the next offseason? ergo.. set miami's ideal realistic starting 5 plus bench after next years free agency.

Going into the off season for me the team to beat was Lakers. When making the moves in the summer, the C's had to keep in mind that they get players that are capable of going against the Laker's bigs.

And I still believe Lakers are the team to beat, and as of right now Heat don't have much depth at the front court. Lakers have the best front court in the league, and if Bynum is healthy.....Pau and Bynum will chew up Bosh + w/e center they have and spit em out.


Lenght is very important, and at the moment, the Heat don't have much of it.
