In chat yesterday, Ryen Russillo stated that Barnes turned down an offer that started at $4 million for next year.

He's been holding out for a payday. If he were willing to sign for the vet minimum, he'd have his choice of contending teams to play for.

Who in the world would offer Barnes $4 million?

He is going to realize that there isn't money for him to sign somewhere for that money unless the team stinks. Wouldn't be shocked if he goes back to Orlando because they can still pay him 125% of his last contract.

If not I see him in Boston or Miami for the vet min.

Who is Ryen Russillo?

I find that claim -- a starting salary of $4 million -- hard to believe.

Compare that to Tony or Marquis and you will find that his overall contributions will be much more than what either of those guys could provide.

His overall contributions would be much more than Marquis and much more than Tony on the offensive end, not the defensive end, which you know Nick.

Everyone knows that Tony's importance came from guarding guys like Kobe, LeBron, D-Wade (even though D-Wade ate us up), Carter (even though Carter is not that good anymore) etc.
No I don't know that.

First off I think his total game is better than both other player's total games. Second, while Tony's defense is good, I believe a healthy Barnes playing in our system can be almost as good. Tony's defense here is tremendously over rated as the system he had behind him helped to make him better than people think.

Would Tony be a better defender than Barnes against SGs? Yeah. Would Barnes be a better defender against SFs. Yes.

With ESPN Radio, I think. Former Boston area sportswriter, I recall him appearing on Celtics broadcasts and pre-games several times as in-studio analyst.

Whatever.  C's are clearly on the sideline at this point.  I gave them a C in the off-season poll.  JO was a nice addition, though I would have preferred Brad Miller.

All the decent wings players are being snatched up.  I wanted Barbosa.  Gone.  Childress.  Gone.  Josh Howard.  Seems unlikely.

Why does Josh Howard seem unlikely?

And there are still a ton of guys out there.
There's a whole thread about this.  Seems possible that he can't be traded until December.  I do not understand the rules enough to comment further.

Well, that report was incorrect I believe, so Howard is very much in play.

Despite some folks irrational dislike for him, I don't think there's much argument that if better options like Josh Howard aren't available, getting Barnes for the vet min or so is a no brainer.  The question is, how much more than that would you give up for him?  Would you package Hanrangody with the D-leaguers?  What about Hanrangody and Sheed's contract?  I would imagine that Barnes would jump on a two year deal for as much as Sheed's contract, but you'd have to throw something in to make Orlando do it.

I don't think Barnes is worth that much, but if you can't make any other Sheed-based deal, I'd rather have him than nothing.

Mike

Well, I am not sure how many people irrationally hate him, I just think a lot of us do not see him as anything close to a MLE type player.  On this team, he is ideally a 4th wing, but we need to use Sheed's contract to get a legit 3rd wing.

I really think its way too early to think that we can't do better than Matt Barnes with Sheed's salary.  There are still a lot of excellent options out there, but these things can take a while to put together.

With the limited options we have at this point...if he signs with us for the vet min it is nothing but a win!

I think that's true.  And for $3 million a year, that would be great.  But for a contract we would be trading Sheed for (in other words, close to full MLE range), plus the assets to make it worthwhile for Orlando to do the sign and trade, they need to get someone better.

I will hold out for Jefferson, Howard, Hinrich, etc.

On one hand, I'm with you. On the other hand, I find many of the offers we've seen this summer equally hard to believe.

Well I never once discussed using Rasheed's contract to get him. I think that move would be ridiculous. I mentioned getting him at the min.

I agree that his total game is better than TA's and I hope you're right, which I think you could be, that TA's defense was more of a product of our system and overrated because of that, but I still don't know if Matt is a better defender than TA.  Hopefully Barnes is a better defender and if he comes here will be much better than TA.

Barnes would be a nice pickup at the vet minimum.

As some have pointed out, his less than stellar defense in last years playoffs can be attributed to injury. I also would like to point out that playing alongside Jameer Nelson, Rashad Lewis and Vince Carter will yield a worse defensive performance compared to playing next to Rondo, KG and Ray or Pierce.

Barnes wants to get paid.  If he is forced to sign for the vet min, I see him preferring to go to a team where he thinks he has a chance to win a starting job.

Well, I would not be surprised if he went to the Heat, so he's not going there, LOL.
