Whatever.  C's are clearly on the sideline at this point.  I gave them a C in the off-season poll.  JO was a nice addition, though I would have preferred Brad Miller.

All the decent wings players are being snatched up.  I wanted Barbosa.  Gone.  Childress.  Gone.  Josh Howard.  Seems unlikely.

Tough scale.

resigning Pierce and Allen and signing JO but losing Tony Allen. = C.  I guess that's not too bad I would suspect some had them lower than that...

From what I remeber a lot of people wanted Matt Barnes here last year. I would take him as a backup for pierce but bradley would really have to jump in a make up a lot of ground quick.

Barnes is about as good as we can possibly get for the vet min (if he'll take it). We really need a bigger wing who can guard athletic swingmen and knock down the occasional open shot. Nate and Bradley ain't gonna cut it. And there really aren't that many FAs left who can do that. Maybe Rasual Butler. Any others?

Also, the article suggests that Barnes can play the 4. Does anyone know if he has that experience? If he can guard smaller 4s effectively, that could be really useful to the C's.

Its also a tough scale because it's 1 week into free agency (2 weeks if you count the dead period when no movement is officially allowed).  I think most teams would get a C or worse, if we were judging their roster's as they stand right now.

If we can land him, and I have to admit that I don't like the chances unless he decides to do the whole "eff you" move to Orlando, I would have no problem whatsoever. I would have offered him a three year contract during the summer of 2008 and still see him as a viable defensive SF that can spread the floor on offense with the second unit.

Some teams in the past have used him defensively at the 4, which I think is a bad notion. Keep him getting 20 minutes per game behind Pierce and he will give you very good defense, about 8 PPG, 5 RPG, .7 STPG, .4 BPG while shooting 44% from the field and 33% from three and 75% from the FT line.

Compare that to Tony or Marquis and you will find that his overall contributions will be much more than what either of those guys could provide.

Danny addressed this on WEEI this morning, and said it was very unlikely, since Barnes opted out of more money, and is unlikely to take the vet minimum.  He is looking to get paid, as he has been trying to for the last 5 or 6 years.

I heard that interview too. However, let's not forget that we do have the non-guaranteed deals of Gaffney and LaFayette to deal in a S & T. Their contracts equate to about 1.5M, which means we can take back somewhere in the area of 1.8M-1.9M with the 125% rule. A two year deal, with a pay increase in the 2nd year, just might be enough to nab Barnes. This would allow us to retain Sheed's contract for use in another deal. We would probably have to trade the Magic a 2nd rd pick, or two, and perhaps cash to make this happen.

agreed, He is a  better and more versatile player then either Tony or Marquis.

I'd be fine with Barnes.  Keep in mind that he was playing injured when we played Orlando in the playoffs.

Good point in that respect maybe a C is what everyone should have them at right now.  I don't think most posters who have them rated a C or below have really thought about in that regard though but, maybe.

Everyone (JO) that we played against was playing injured including the Lakers (Bynum) yet old age and injuries are always brought up with the C's.  It's like rain on a wedding day so to speak.

His overall contributions would be much more than Marquis and much more than Tony on the offensive end, not the defensive end, which you know Nick.

Everyone knows that Tony's importance came from guarding guys like Kobe, LeBron, D-Wade (even though D-Wade ate us up), Carter (even though Carter is not that good anymore) etc.

I find it curious that despite what Danny says, the two teams that Barnes is interested in can't offer him that much money. Maybe he's catching on to the fact that he's not getting the money he wants after all?

I trust Danny for sure, but if he's still not on a team come say August, chances are both of us are frontrunners.

And like the article reports, we're in more need of wings than the Heat are.  :D

Despite some folks irrational dislike for him, I don't think there's much argument that if better options like Josh Howard aren't available, getting Barnes for the vet min or so is a no brainer.  The question is, how much more than that would you give up for him?  Would you package Hanrangody with the D-leaguers?  What about Hanrangody and Sheed's contract?  I would imagine that Barnes would jump on a two year deal for as much as Sheed's contract, but you'd have to throw something in to make Orlando do it.

I don't think Barnes is worth that much, but if you can't make any other Sheed-based deal, I'd rather have him than nothing.

Why does Josh Howard seem unlikely?

And there are still a ton of guys out there.
There's a whole thread about this.  Seems possible that he can't be traded until December.  I do not understand the rules enough to comment further.

In chat yesterday, Ryen Russillo stated that Barnes turned down an offer that started at $4 million for next year.

He's been holding out for a payday. If he were willing to sign for the vet minimum, he'd have his choice of contending teams to play for.
