Matt Barnes gone to Heat or Celtics?

Quote
Matt Barnes, who started 56 games at small forward for the Magic last season, apparently has heavy interest from two of Orlando’s main East rivals: the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics.

Those with knowledge of the situation say Barnes is strongly considering the Heat or the Celtics, among several other teams.

The Barnes’ camp still contends that the Magic have not offered him a contract and have moved on after signing free agent guard-forward Quentin Richardson.

The defensive-minded Celtics might make more sense. Boston is looking for back-up help behind small forward Paul Pierce and at power forward behind Kevin Garnett after the retirement of Rasheed Wallace.

The Heat are crowded at the small-foward and power-forward spots.

LeBron James will start at small forward, with Mike Miller coming off the bench. Chris Bosh will be the power forward, backed by Udonis Haslem.

I remember last year it seemed like everybody here wanted Matt Barnes, but this year it seems like nobody here wants him lol.  Where I stood was that I wanted Grant Hill and not Matt Barnes.  Idk where I stand on this now.

No thanks.

We saw what he does as a SF defender.  Pierce had his best series of the playoffs.

I'm torn on the idea because I think he is an effective player but I'm not sure I like him.  A lot of the decisions are based on what people saw in the playoffs so it is similar to JO in that Barnes had a bad series against us.

In 25 minutes per game he averaged 8.8 points and 5.5 rebounds to go with 1.7 assists.  This goes with .7 steals and .4 blocks.  I think TA was more effective in the minutes he played for Boston but he is also twice as expensive.

I guess if he comes in on a minimum deal then it is a no brainer but I would like to get another option in case he turns into this years Marquis Daniels.

Danny addressed this on WEEI this morning, and said it was very unlikely, since Barnes opted out of more money, and is unlikely to take the vet minimum.  He is looking to get paid, as he has been trying to for the last 5 or 6 years.

Thx for the update Chris TP.

Not sure how I'd feel about bringing in Barnes, except for a vet min contract, but if we're going to judge him solely on his 2010 playoffs, then what are we doing giving JO the full MLE?

I think Barnes would be a great addition to this team. Barnes is just one of those players that you love to have on your team, but absolutely hate him when he plays for the opposing side. Esp. since TA left, he could be a very sufficient back-up to Pierce and Allen on the defensive end. And as for offense, he has more game than he is given credit for. He's a career 7ppg/4.5rpg/2apg guy. He had his best season with the run-and-gun offense in Phoenix, which means that he would be great on the break with Rondo. In that season (2008-2009), he has 10/5.5/3. Those are real legit numbers. Along with running the fast break, he can hit the open 3 pointers. Yeah he struggled against the C's, but then again, who didn't?

So with his size, 6'-7" (same as Pierce) and at 226lb, he's a very capable defender.

Question is, will he really come to Boston for the veteran's minimum? He definitely wants more money, especially when Travis Outlaw and Bargnani are getting deals like they have been. If he is to take the veteran min, he would probably like to stay in Florida if the Heat are giving him offers. But I have like this guy since he played for the Warriors. I hope we can sign him...

I do remember him whining a little when he was on GSW about not getting a contract offer even though he was somewhat effective in that system.

I didn't realize he opted out of more money and would never give him anything more than vet minimum especially watching the defensive prowess he exhibited while playing the Celtics.

He has been living off a single series a few years ago in Nellie ball where his shots fell.  Even today, there are people that think he is a top 3 point shooter.

That series is just the latest evidence that he is unbelievable overrated by fans.  I don't think team overrate him though.  That's why he is still looking for a team to 'pay him'

Whatever.  C's are clearly on the sideline at this point.  I gave them a C in the off-season poll.  JO was a nice addition, though I would have preferred Brad Miller.

All the decent wings players are being snatched up.  I wanted Barbosa.  Gone.  Childress.  Gone.  Josh Howard.  Seems unlikely.

Uhhh YEAH! We'll take Matt Barnes! C'mon guys, whats left out there for good solid wings??? Nothin!  I would definitely take MAtt Barnes - he plays tough and a good defender and could be our Ron Artest-type - Attitude n Chip on his shoulder.  I think he'd fit nicely here in Boston.  The Celtics are running out of options guys - NO time to be picky now w/ a GOOD player like Barnes,  and the good thing is Barnes may be running out of options....He took a chance and opted out to try to get more money, but in the end he may have to sign for vet. min. somewhere.

Fair enough I can't argue if there is there is no one else better available.  He better not turn into a pumpkin again like last year's playoffs though.  J/K

You keep ragging on Barnes.  If not him, who?

Why does Josh Howard seem unlikely?

And there are still a ton of guys out there.

Let's not forget that Barnes was dealing with severe back spasms. In fact, reports were that if it had been regular season games he wouldn't have been out there.
