The Memphis Commercial Appeal is reporting that Tony Allen is close to signing with the Grizzlies.   I thought Danny was working on signing him.  They say that Memphis is offering a multiyear contract that starts at 3 million.  I can't see 3 million being a problem for the Celtics.  Maybe it is the multi year that he wants more years than Danny is willing to offer, like it was with Posey.  I hope Danny keeps him.  He is finally starting to pay dividends for all the years we stuck with him.

The Grizzlies are close to agreeing on a contract with Boston Celtics free agent swingman Tony Allen, The Commercial Appeal has learned.

Allen, 28, is an unrestricted free agent and the Griz are hoping to sign him to a multiyear deal starting at roughly $3 million.

The Griz decided on Allen because of the defense and toughness he could bring to the backcourt off the bench. Memphis is also said to like Allen's leadership qualities and championship attitude given he's played for the title-contending Celtics.

I'd be very suprised if an offer of 3m wasn't matched by the Celtics front office.  Tony's a proven defensive wing which is worth that at least.  Contract length may be an issue but if good Tony remains with us he is a tradeable asset.

OR if Tony does go I wouldn't be surprised to see Danny get PP and RA a back-up that would be a starter on another team ...
Stay classy, San Diego. Hello, Baxter? Baxter, is that you? Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee. Is this Wilt Chamberlain? Have the decency to say something.

Hope this is not true. It's important to have a defensive stopper like him in a championship calibre team, especially when our starting sg and sf are not getting younger. 3m for 3 years sound reasonable to me.

yeah considering we don't have many ways to sign players at this point (over the cap and MLE used on JO), I think TA is a must re-sign....

Did anyone else here Dickerson say that we had the Tony signing locked up? ::)  I really didn't worry about losing Tony because I believe him.

I don't see why we couldn't offer the same deal if it's just 3 mil per.  And I don't think Memphis can offer more playing time (Conley, Mayo and Gay seem to have a lock on the starting spots).

2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

That would be a massive blow ... considering the Celtics have spent their MLE.

That would put the Celtics in a real awkward position. Very reliant on the Sheed trade asset.

Memphis must not have liked Ronnie Brewer's asking price and/or felt that Brewer was more likely to sign with another team (Utah?).

Otherwise, I cannot understand this move. Not with OJ Mayo, Rudy Gay, Xavier Henry and Ronnie Brewer on the wings.

This would be downright shocking.  $3 million per year is way too little...particularly for a team like Memphis.  With contending teams really looking for a defensive stopper, I think he could get much more than that, and play for a much better team.  I don't buy this at all.

This really stinks if we lose Tony.  He's coming into his prime years so the next few years will probably be his best. >:(

I wouldn't expect Tony to get any more than that on the market. His lack of a jump shot is a major turn off for most teams.

If this is a 4 or 5 year deal, then I can see why Danny wouldn't do it. He got burned once already giving out a 5 year $15 million deal to a bit role player that had a decent playoff run(Scal). He won't do it again with Tony because I just don't see Tony giving this team 5 good years with his inconsistency and injury problems.

If it's 4 or 5 years, bye bye Tony. Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

The last time this reporter posted he was telling of the Commercial Appeal learning of Rudy Gay's signing, so he's not a crackpot.

Still, I would be shocked if the C's whiffed on TA.  Makes very little basketball sense as we have very little way of replacing him, unless Avery Bradley gains 20 lbs of muscle and few years of NBA experience before the start of the season.

How exactly did Scal's contract burn us?  And I think TA's body of work is quite a bit more impressive than Scal's was at the time of his signing.

Ronald Tillery is a very reliable beat reporter. Great sources within the Grizzlies.

He had a couple of fantastic interviews with Michael Heisley and Lionel Hollins at the end of the season.
